It DID NOT come with the same software update for everyone. It came with the 6.1.3 software update for a few people, but it also happened out of the blue on other versions, and after upgrading on other versions, and I just responded to another thread where a user reported the problem appearing 6 months after updating to 6.1.3. Plus the fact that if you take the phone to an Apple store they will tell you it is a hardware problem.
Within the forum there are a number of posts from people who fixed it by freezing their phone, or by heating it with a hair dryer. Heat sensitive software? Really? Again, not a recommended approach unless your phone is out of warranty, but clear evidence that the problem is in the hardware.

If it is a hardware issue then it could just be a certain lot of iPhones that were manufactured and distributed. That would explain why only certain 4s phones are being effected. My 4s just started with the grey out. I am gonna try the freezer trick before turning my phone over to the "Genius Bar."

Hey I am giving an update now.I tried the freezing method to rescue my WIFI, this worked for 5 days, and then the WIFI got grey again. And I went to Apple store today, they told me that I need to pay 199 dollars plus tax to replace my iphone with a new one. I don't want to pay 200 dollars to fix this, this makes me feel stupid, but if I don't fix my iphone, then my iphone doesn't work as a smartphone, which is also stupid. Feel bad about this.

Wow, that's a sad story. Perhaps you should have purchased the extended warranty for $99?
Maybe you can ask your carrier for a free, early upgrade?
Or maybe you can use a pay-as-you go phone for a while?
That's all I can think of other than paying the $199.

I bought my iphone as a pre-paid no contract phone My data use is not heavy, so I didn't join the data plan and saved money on this. I had been relying on the use of wifi, but now, my smartphone became silent since the inactive use on Wifi. Apple is mean on this, since it's merely a hardware problem and no fault of the iphone users. How could I justify the payment of 200 dollars to fix the wifi?

Apple isn't mean. They honored their side of the bargain. You reported the defect after your warranty expired.
You get a one-year warranty at time of purchase. When you bought the device, you agreed to these terms.

Hi guys, I have some update about my greyed wifi......My wifi is back, and I didn't do anything...
Soon after my wifi greyed out, I found my iphone battery also became weak, it only lasted one day, and I have to recharge every night. But, yesterday, in the end of day, I found my iphone battery scale still 90% full, and I talked on the phone for about 30 min and also texted messages during the day, wow, I am surprised, and then I checked my wifi, and found that it is back active!
I am thinking about why the wifi is back, I believe that this is a hardware problem, remember some people said before, freezing your iphone may bring your greyed wifi back, so low temperature can probably help rescue the hardware problem, such as some parts may shrink, and now the winter season may be actually helping my wifi back! Make sense?
But I still don't understand why my battery is also back strong....
