I upgraded my iPhone to version 5 and Windows 8 does not recognize the device. Any ideas how to fix this? I was able to connect my iPhone 4 successfully before on Windows 8. Any ideas what driver I need to download to get my iPhone 5 working on Windows 8. When I do a search automatically for drivers, it returns nothing.

Are you saying it doesn't show up in iTunes? Have you upgraded to iTunes 11?
Yes, I already had iPhone 4 installed on iTunes 11. Is there a specific driver I need to download?
Doing a little Googling, it looks like you are not alone. And it's not just the iPhone 5, some people are having issues with iPhone 4's on Windows 8 as well. Close iTunes, stop the "Apple Mobile Device Service," plug in the iPhone and then start the "Apple Mobile Device Service" again then open iTunes.
Try restarting the Apple Mobile Device Service - http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1567
Also, do you have the full version of Windows 8 or the beta version?
Nope - I tried that. I am going to dig around and check for another solution. There has to be a driver out there that Windows 8 has certified. I am also running the Windows 8 Professional version.
I got it to work but I must say it is unstable because I have no idea what I actually did. According to Microsoft, you need to run iTunes 11 using the compatibility mode which I tried it but still did now work. Then I read another forum to disconnect the USB cable and stop "Apple Mobile Device", plug your phone, and startup the service. It still did not work. After trial and error, I stopped all apple services, uninstalled the unknown USB driver, ran compatibility mode, started up all services and fired up iTunes 11 without my phone plugged in. Finally, I plugged in my phone and iTunes immediately recognized it. This method was somewhat unorthodox but it worked. Hope this can help others using Windows 8 & iPhone 5.
mine shows in itunes just fine - but only allows me to sync photos to phone, not off the phone and my pc doesnt see the iphone as a device at all...
very frustrating i need the photos off of my phone asap!!
This is what i did and its working now.
open device manager , right click my computer icon , then select manage devices
look for "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" usually will be at the buttom of the list
then right click "generic usb hub" and uniniall it
re-plug your iphone after that
it worked for me 🙂

The USB driver and the apple Mobile device areinstalled correctly and it is also visible under other devices, but when i try doing update driver, it can't find a suitable driver for i phone 5 nither in my

Step 1: Install the latest version of iTunes on Windows 8 (using compatibility mode). Windows 8 gives you that option for compatibility mode:
Right click itunes installer.
Cick run in compatibility mode windows 7. If it has no issues, itunes will be installed for windows 8 or it will fail.
(reboot your machine)
Step 2: Stopped all apple services
Open a command prompt and type:
net stop "Apple Mobile Device"
net stop "Bonjour Service"
net stop "iPod Service" (find all Apple services or just use the GUI Services under control panel)
Step 3: Unstalled the unknown USB driver
For this, you need to go to Device Manager and uninstall unknown USB drivers.
Don't be scared, if Windows does not understand that driver, free up the space for a driver that actually works when you plug in your cable:
(please tell me you know how to get to device drivers)
Step 4: Start up all services and fire up iTunes 11 without my phone plugged in. (nothing plugged in / bare startup mode)
net start "Apple Mobile Device"
net start "Bonjour Service"
net start "iPod Service" (find all Apple services or just use the GUI Services under control panel)
Step 5: Plug your iPhone5 and let the USB manager do its thing and iTunes immediately will recognized it.
Step 6: Give me some credit becuase I typed all this stuff for you? 🙂

I had this issue with an iPhone 5S and windows 8.1. The driver was missing. These are the steps to determine if the driver is missing and add the proper driver.
I'm having the same issue. I could comment about how I syncing in one direction, from a PC (that doesnt have a camera) to an iPhone (device that takes pictures), seems to be less than intelligent.
