Q: Safari Mac Toolbar keeps disappearing - help!

Each time I start Safari, the toolbar is missing and I have to go into the VIEW menu and turn it back on. Each time a new window pops up, same thing.

I have tried ensuring that all windows have the toolbar before closing it down, but this has not helped.

This just started about two weeks ago.

Anyone have some ideas? I had installed nothing new.

I've been struggling with this.  I think I solved it.  RIGHT click on the double arrows upper right corner and unclick Hide Toolbar.  Should work.

Such a good tip and if your blua arrows are the problem, they will be highlighted. Then you can click and it all comes back to normal, thank goodness.

Hit Exit Full Screen under the View Menu - this worked for me!

@PearlRiver: Good tip. I notice that the View menu also shows a keyboard shortcut, <option><command><T>, that toggles between "show" Safari toolbar and Hide Safari Toolbar. This is on my Mac OS X 10.7.5 running Safari 6.0.5.

However, there are some inconsistencies with this: <option><command><T> does not work in Full Screen mode. But you can toggle Full Screen mode Off/On either using <Ctrl><Cmd><F>, or by holding the cursor's hot spot (tip of the arrow cursor) at the top edge of the display, until the Finder's Menu Bar pops down again.

IMO, Apple has lost its grip. There are now so many undocumented and seriously puzzling GUI behaviours in our once-beloved Mac OS X, that I am half seriously looking for a welll thought out, consistent replacement. I suspect things are only going to get worse with OS X Mavericks, with the move to put the same, gesture-driven interface on both OS X and IOS 7. IMO, the sanguine thing to do is for Apple to provide OS X Mavericks with a simple "Toggle" between the IOS GUI and the original Mac OS X GUI. This would work better for gesture-challenged people like me. I am one of those who detest the IOS GUI and seriously handicapped, and occasionally just plain wrong, spelling-prediction on my iPhone (and Macs), But then I also prefer a real, physical QWERTY keyboard. I am part of the dying breed of literate dinosaurs.

I spent a long time mucking with this problem. I finally realized that, under View I needed to unclick Enter View Full Screen. That fixed my problem, anyway.

My navigation bar was gone. When I used command L it would come back, but when I clicked on the page it would disappear again.  I believe this is a software bug. However, I discovered that after I used the command L, and quit the browser (command Q), then reopened the browser, the navigation bar was now permanently back. Problem solved.

Pressing the Command key, along with the Control key and the letter "F" key will toiggle Full Screen Mode off and on.

The original discussion is the Toolbar/navigation bar disappearing. I was addressing that. The discusssion somehow drifted to turning Full Screen Mode on and off.

I believe this is the solution. Pull down the View menu, selecting Customize Toolbar. A window opens providing several tools that can be dragged to the toolbar. Select the default set, at the bottom of the window, and drag it to your tool bar. This solved it for me. Why the toolbar got messed up in the first place is still a mystery.

I've had all of the toolbar and full screen issues in the discussion above. They seem to occur randomly. This week the mouse pointer has begun randomly moving around the screen. The screen gets a spasm and tries to scroll left ot right and zooms in. Now the dictionary has begun appearing randomly, offering a definition of the last word typed--such as "in" in the previous paragraph.

Who has time to mess with this when trying to finish up a project. Anyone else had these problems?

My menu bar kept disappearing (in Safari only), I managed to fix it by going to Safari - Preferences, then select Tabs, and when you see "Open pages in tabs instead of windows" , select 'Never'. I'm not sure if you're happy with that option, (to have windows instead of tabs) but at least the menu bar stays fixed this way. (I found it annoying when it kept disappearing - it was slowing everything up for me.)
