Q: what is the status bar at the top of my screen called?

Good morning, can anyone tell me what the status bar is called at the top of my screen? Its the one with the clock and the battery statud bar. It wont appear properly after startup, as in being grey, it stays black and I cant see the icons or information. is this a problem?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, Mac OS X (10.7.5)

The menu Bar

System preferences/Desk top and Screen saver/
Desktop tab

Uncheck and check translucent menu bar

If that does not work then
run terminal and enter

killall SystemUIServer

Just checking that you do not have invert colours checked ? However that would make everything black.

system preferences/accessability
Display/ check uncheck invert colours
