Q: New Macbook pro/air keyboard layout FAIL. 1000+ order on hold.

Can anyone confirm if macbook air/pro will turn on right away when the power button is pressed or do you have to hold it for 2 seconds or so. I hate how the power button is on the keyboard. Seems like a brain dead penny pinching move by Apple, there are so many things wrong with that. But if it won't initiate unless held for a certain time then that is acceptable I guess. I want to confirm this because I want to mass order 1000+ airs for a school board for use by younger students and we can't have the laptops turning on or off accidentally. Thanks.

    When you press the "on" button on a MacBook Pro, there will be a moment before it boots - probably around 1.5 seconds; the Air should be very similar. You don't have to keep the button depressed. The boot time for an Air will be signficantly faster than a Pro, since it uses flash memory.

     

    I strongly suggest going to your local Apple store, if one's nearby. Then you can make a more informed decision.

    I will go to the Apple store but it looks, like you just answered my question. I can't see us getting macbooks really. Too bad Apple really screwed up. Seems like a brain dead move to me. You don't mess around with the power button. You leave it alone. It should never be a regular keyboard button that is easily pressable.

    The power button is wholly distinct from the keyboard keys and it would be a ham-handed person who would mistakenly press the power key when accessing the keyboard. You really need to look at the computer before you make any purchasing decisions.

    You are making a big deal out of nothing. The MBP's power button is separate from the keyboard. The MBA's is the upper right most key.

     

    To shut down, restart, or sleep a Mac unintentionally in the manner you describe would be a design flaw so fundamentally egregious no one would buy one.

    Aditionally and more importantly, the power button only prompts a dialogue box when the computer is on. It requires an addition deliberate step to actually shut it down.

    I just went to the Apple store today. The power button looks and feels exactly like a regular keyboard key. It is very possible to accidentally turn it on while cleaning the laptop. I know there's a dialog when you press it when it's on. Doesn't matter, it's still easier to shut it down then before. It need to be away from the keyboard. There must be Apple PR people posting on all these forums. So thank you, clintonfrombirmingham for confirming for me that you must be mantally challenged as the button is in no way distinct. And thank you John Galt for agreeing with me that the new power button design is so fundamentally egregious.

    wrong on all accounts.

     

    When on, accidently hitting the power button does NOT turn the Air off.

     

    Hitting the power button to power it on takes a hair less than 1 second, as it should be.

     

    By your fallacy (reductio ad absurdum), there shouldnt be fire on a stove because its "too easy to get burned"

     

    If youre using anything other than a duster on the Air keyboard, then youre doing it wrong, as such accidentally turning it on isnt an issue.

     

    How often do you plan on actually cleaning the keyboard? Use a duster and clean fingers and its basically once twice a year.

     

    Ive owned three Airs, and talked to 1000s of owners of same.  Youre the FIRST person who has attacked the Air power button without owning one..... and you would be (but dont own one) the FIRST person to attack the power button who does own one.

     

    The Air is best in its class of superslim notebooks, place the order.
