Q: iphoto upgrade database problem

When we got our Mac and loaded all of our pictures in to iPhoto (around 50,000 at the time) it was dreadfully slow so I bought Aperture since it was supposed to be better at handling larger numbers of files.  Then Apple announced that the new version of iPhoto could work with Aperture databases so I upgraded.  There were no apparent problems with the install and "upgrade" of my photo library but now all of the folder/project/event names have been mangled.  I still show around 15,000 events, which sounds about right, but they have names like "hnnMgkVkllsM0945mHHggkl" or some gibberish like that.  Has anyone ever seen this before and more importantly, is there a way to recover from this?

MacBook Pro (17-inch Late 2011), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

I still show around 15,000 events, which sounds about right, but they have names like "hnnMgkVkllsM0945mHHggkl" or some gibberish like that.

Where are you seeing this? In the Finder, looking at the iPhoto/Aperture library? Or in iPhoto's source list in iPhoto?  If you are seeing these random event names in iPhoto's source list, you must have imported the Aperture library as files, and not opened it as library.

What are your current Aperture version and iPhoto version, kellyc12? And how exactly did you migrate the Aperture library to iPhoto?

To share the library between aperture and iPhoto, you need Aperture 3.3 or later and iPhoto 9.3 or later, see:

Aperture 3.3: Using a unified photo library with iPhoto and Aperture

To use the Aperture library in iPhoto, make sure it has been opened at least once in Aperture 3.3. or later to upgrade it, then launch iPhoto 9.3 or later with the alt/options-key held down, to open the library selection panel and select your Aperture library. All Aperture projects should be displayed in iPhoto with the correct names.

How did you open the Aperture library in iPhoto? Something must have been different.

Could you revert to a backup of the Aperture library from the time before you migrated it to iPhoto?

    Regards

Thanks for your reply Léonie.  As I was writing a long reply to answer your questions I was looking around and I didn't realize that my Aperture library from BEFORE the upgrade was still intact.  That library contains all of the organization and metadata that is important to me and I can rebuild a few months of photos to bring it up to date now.  Thanks for pointing me in the right direction .

Of course, now I have some additional questions about killing the current iPhoto library and trying again to import the Aperture library or sharing it betweent the two apps.  Should I start another thread for that?

    Now, that is great!

See this document for importing/merging libraries:

If still questions remain, it will be best to start a new thread; then more helpers might jump in
