To lock/unlock the screen rotation double-click the Home button, swipe the multitasking bar from left to right, then tap icon with the circular arrow in a square. Read: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3805

Sep 4, 2013 7:27 PM in response to drpeckerheadby Skydiver119,Also, another way to lock the rotation is the little switch by the volume rocker. That switch can be a rotation lock or an all mute. If your device is rotation locked you'll see a little padlock with a circular arrow around it.
If it only does it part of the time, there are some apps that simply don't rotate. That's how they're designed.

Sep 9, 2013 7:25 PM in response to drpeckerheadby drpeckerhead,Did not drop it but hit it with my knuckles on the screen next to the lock switch and Bingo! It got fixed! The only intelligent conclusion is that the switch was stuck even though it moved. Thanks guys for bearing the pain with me.

Jan 21, 2014 3:42 PM in response to drpeckerheadby pkeffer20,I have an iPad 2 with IOS 7 and when it got stuck in portrait i hit it near the lock switch and swiped with four fingers to another app and that fixed it
