Crazy Level 1 Level 1 (95 points)

Hi,

This is weird but my 15" MBP with Ret Disp doesn't like to play sound through external speakers. Music etc plays fine through the built in speakers but about 3 mins after I plug in my 3.5mm plug, volume greys out and I can't get any sound unless I pull out the plug and just listen to the internal speakers again. I have already reset the PRAM. Any more ideas much appreciated!?

How does it perform with headphones?  The problem might be with your speakers.

    Ciao.

Sounds like a bad jack (pun not intended )

Since you have reset the PRAM, I can see only two options, reinstall the OS and/or a visit to an Apple store genius bar.

    Ciao.

you mean a bad socket on the computer?... bummer if so... as soon as I plug in, I can see from my "Sound Settings" in "System Preferences" that it keeps jumping to digital-out mode?? This computer is just over a year old.

There is a micro switch in the socket that senses if the plug is analog or digital.

If you look in the socket do you see a red light? If so it means the socket is stuck in digital mode. Some users have been able to unstick the switch using something like a toothpick (something non-conductive) and GENTLY probing in the socket.

If the system is under warranty I'd suggest a trip to the genius bar. Even if it is not under warranty you might be better off going to the Genius bar first before you try any home remedies.

Hi... I don't see a red light when I take the plug out cos it drops back to normal "internal speakers" mode. At least that's a positive, otherwise I would not be able to ahve any audio out at all, ever. This is not under warranty and I'm a LONG way from any Genius Bar... looks like I'm in trouble. Thanks for trying to help. Maybe next time.

    1. Reset SMC.     http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

        Choose the method for:

"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".

    2. Plug in the speakers and reset SMC.

    3. Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup

        Audio Devices window

        Side Bar

        Click the Built-in Output.

Under Mute any of the boxes checked? If so, uncheck it.

        Plug the speakers and test.

    Best.

Hi, thanks again for the help...

I reset the SMC a number of times and each time it fixes the problem for 3-4 minutes, but then goes back to the digital mode. We're almost there!... if we can just get it to stick!?!?
