Jul 3, 2014 11:29 PM in response to Kenichi Watanabeby johnhb2,I've just read that you can buy a Seagate Expansion 1TB Portable Hard Drive USB 3.0 (Model Number: STBF500300) which is powered from the USB cable, so there is no need for an external power supply. This costs $119 here in New Zealand but this may have come out subsequent to these postings in late 2013.

Jul 4, 2014 12:15 AM in response to johnhb2by Kenichi Watanabe,Most external hard drives with a 2.5-inch drive inside (old and new) are powered by the computer's USB port, without the need for a separate power supply. USB flash ("thumb") drives are also powered by the port. But iPads (or any iOS device) cannot use external storage devices, of any type.
