Hey all,

I am thinking about partitioning my internal ssd to create a bootcamp partition to run windows 7 for gaming purposes.

My question is... do I have to delete the data on my internal harddrive in order to re-partition it while creating the windows bootcamp partition?  I know when re-formatting external drives, you usually have to delete the data in order to re-partition it, is this the case when creating a bootcamp parition?

If this happens to be the case, would I be able to restore the mac ox part of the partition from a time machine backup after re-partitioning the internal drive?  Or would I have to fresh copy / install everything on my mac osx drive?

If it is possible, is there anything special you have to do in order to keep the data on the mac osx part of the partition?  Or is it just as straight forward as following the instructions from Apple?

Thanks!

MacBook Pro (15-inch Late 2011), Mac OS X (10.7.3), 8 GB of RAM, 512 GB SSD

no unles you wish the new partition to be bigger then the free space you have on your disc

Thank you for the quick reply.  Helps me out a ton!

Use the Bootcamp assistant found in the Utilities folder to partition your drive .

This creates a special and non standard partition tree with two tiny and extra hidden partitions necessary for safe double booting of the same drive.

The OSx partition is reduced however all data and the boot sequence is retained by default.

The two hidden partitions are a Boot Rom to allow EFI booting of windows in lieu of the normal BIOS Boot Rom and a second small separator both are around 160 to 200mb in size.

Once you create the Bootcamp partition you load your windows disc and follow the normal install procedure very carefully.

Caveat and recommendation make the partitions notably differing sizes as this reduces the risk of accidentally installing windows over OSx during the Windows install procedure.

Thank you for the pointers Keith, I really appreciate it, especially re: creating partitions of different sizes as to not install windows over osx.  I am creating this partition soley for gaming; it's really a shame that a majority of games aren't made for mac osx, and sadly I have to run windows 7.
