I have FCP 6.0.6 running on my iMac without any issues.

Will I be able to install it and use it if I purchase a new Mac using 10.8.x?

Will I need to upgrade to FCPX?

Thanks for any help.

Actually I have final Cut Studio 3.  So i want to know about all the programs, not just FCP.

should be ok.  Just do some searching here.  There's an issue with getting the installer to work.  I've just installed rosetta from my snowleopard install disk, but there are some that say that's dangerous and have an alternative method.

Could you please clarify: according to the Wikipedia entry for Final Cut Studio, version 3 includes FCP 7, not 6.

You should never attempt to install Rosetta into Lion or Mt. Lion.  At best, it just wilt will not function and at worst it will cause problems with your system.  Just last month, a poster to this forum indicated that his version of Final Cut stopped working after he attempted to install Rosetta, in the misguided hope of installing Compressor.

That being said, Michael Grenadier is one of the acknowledged experts on Final Cut Pro on this forum and I am sure he will guide you through one of the alternative installation methods he indicates are available.

MichaelLAX, can you post a link to this post you refer to.  Just did a serach in this forum for rosetta and don't see the post you mention in the last few months.

Yes, I was actually somewhat surprised that you did not already add your own commentary to the OP's problem on this thread:

I may have left out the fact that when I performed the migration to the MP around the first of the year, FCS, with the exception of Compressor, worked fine.  FCS stopped working when I tried to install Rosetta.

    FCP 6.0.6

    Motion 3

    Compressor 3

    iDVD 7

I'm hearing folks now tell me that FCPX isn't all that terrible, in fact they are now glad they upgraded.  But that now begs the question of Motion, Compressor & iDVD.

Thank you, forum folk, for your patience and very helpful support. This is a wonderful spot.

Brentwood, CA as in West Los Angeles or in Northern California?

Northern California, East Bay area - nice spot - been here a long time.

And of course I'm sure you realized that I didn't mean iDVD 7, what a botch I made of this post.

    it is DVDSP 4

So I don't know what Studio Pro I own.  I upgraded in 2011.  I think I'll move to FCPX when I get up the courage.

It may or may not be practical because of space considerations but one thought would be to hang on to your current iMac as a dedicated FCS work station after you upgrade..

FCPX is so different than previous versions of Final Cut that they really should have named it differently. Impossible to predict whether you'd like it or hate it. Plenty of tutorials on the Web (MacBreak Studio and Creative Cow, just to name two). If the tutorials seem promising, try the trial before you make a decision.
