Q: Why do payment options not list using credit balance from previously redeemed gift card?

The first time I attempted to use my credit balance (from previously redeemed gift card), the payment options listed did not include using my credit balance.  Apparently the only way to use a gift card is to pick the songs first (and make sure you buy enough to use the entire amount of the gift card) and then redeem the gift card as your method of payment. The only way to get help from Apple is to pay $19 so add that to the cost of your gift card when you consider buying one.

Are you being prompted to enter billing details when buying items from the store ? When I buy things then as long as my account's balance covers what I'm buying (if you are in the US then you need to add on your state's sales tax to the listed price) then I'm not prompted to enter any payment info - and what I don't spend remains on my account for my next purchase. If you are gifting content then that will be charged to your credit card, you can't gift from a balance.

    From http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5582 :

When making purchases, content credits are used first, followed by Gift Certificate, iTunes Card, or Allowance Account credits; your credit card or PayPal account is then charged for any remaining balance.

I picked a song and clicked "buy". I was then taken to a page that asked me to choose a credit card or Pay Pal to pay for the song. There was no option to use the credit balance from a previously redeemed gift card.

How did you create the account, and was that your first purchase ? If you didn't create it by following the instructions on this page then you will have been required to enter payment details before your first purchase : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2534

I had made purchases before using my credit card but this was the first time I attempted to use my gift card credit. The previous time I purchased one song for 99 cents and my credit card was charged over $400 so I had to cancel that credit card and I will not use my credit card again to purchase iTunes songs.

And you were prompted to enter card details when buying ? Did you initially have enough balance on your account when trying to purchase it ? I've only been prompted to enter payment details if my balance wasn't enough

I had a $15 credit and I was spending 99 cents. My only choices for payment were credit card (my old information was there with notice that my credit card was expired) and Pay Pal, which also takes from my credit card). I did not want to update credit card information and risk having unauthorized charges again and I didn't want to use Pay Pal either for the same reason.

If you have a credit card on your account then it needs to valid. Do you have the 'none' option on the payment details page on your account so that you can remove it ? Or you could see if anything on this thread helps you remove it
