Yes it is possible. Wireless are less certain than wired. Also the wireless recognition system may be turned on by default, which means you have to bypass it by making sure you have a compatible keyboard in the first place. Good keyboards to try are those by Logitech and MacAlly made for the Mac that are wired USB. Microsoft USB keyboards are typically quite good too, though the command (Apple Logo or Cloverleaf icon) and option key placement is reversed and the Windows and Alt keys are used in their place. Microsoft did make a patch that switched them so Mac users could get used to their orientation on other Macs.
I think you misunderstood me. I didn't mention a wireless keyboard. This is the USB keyboard with the numeric keypad. I could care less about the compatibility of a wireless keyboard.
My question is specific to the Apple keyboard, not other brands. If I'm going to have to purchase a keyboard, I'll buy an older used Apple keyboard.
I am having a problem with using the Numeric Keys on my new Apple wired keyboard. The keyboard has been properly "identified", but we need to use the Numeric Keys to enter figures. I did go into Universal Access to see if there was something I could do regarding the on/off mouse key setting and set it to off.
This "seemed to work" -- for the rest of the day. However after shutting down for the day, the situation reversed itself and the Numeric Keys again did not work. Tried this several times, but the settings never became saved and kept reverting.
I've tried 2 new Logitech Keyboards (Wireless Wave Combo) -- as well -- this new Apple wired keyboard is my 3rd keyboad. It seems that a few years ago Logitech "stopped" making Mac compatible keyboards. I think this is true as I looked for the MAC Compatible logo on the boxes at Staples, Best Buy, etc. and no longer found them. They are only PC compatible or, USB functional.
Now that I need a decent Mac compatible keyboard, the search has been frustrating.

My keyboard did the same thing. However, for me, after hitting one of the function keys, the numeric keys worked.
So far, I've had luck using the keyboard. The only issue seems to be that every time I start up, the keyboard identification application comes up automatically, and gets stuck. Obviously, the Power Mac has Leopard; the last operating system that supported Power PCs. So, maybe it's a compatibility/firmware thing with these new keyboards?

The "only" things which allows the Numeric Keypad keys to be used is in Universal Access -
(by turning the Mouse Keys "OFF") HOWEVER, when computer is turned off nightly, the
settings revert and must be changed again daily -- ugh-h.
BY THE WAY, my "Stickies" application will ALSO not retain any changes. ??? Could this
be a software issue???
1. I made sure I am the chief admin of my computer
2. Am using OSX 10.6.8 (all software is up-to-date)
3. Am using a "new" corded Apple keyboard
4. Checked all Fn keys
5. Checked Spaces & Expose setup info
6. Checked all Mouse and new Keyboard setup info
7. Have verified and repaired Disk Permissions (from within Disk Utility App)
9. Rebooted after all checks above
10. Went into Universal Access -- again (turned Mouse Keys "OFF" again
11. No changes -- either on the numeric key usage OR the Stickies app notes
12. Need help . . .
Might ry this...
Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop for now...
Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

What is the "gray radian" and what do you mean by "let it go"? For how long?
Will it finally indicate the Hard Drive has been repaired?
Then" if I do a restart does this take me out of the Safe Boot back to normal usage?
What do I do with the files temporarily moved to the Desktop after returning to ? normal usage ?
Lastly could any software actually be corrupted and causing these problems rather than the Hard Drive
Another situation -- on another IMac (3 years old): OSX 10.6.8
What's causing a translucent black screen to slowly drop down with a dialog box indicating that I need to "restart" my computer. You can see the entire desktop through this translucent screen. It covers the whole screen and has this dialog box in the center to shut down. This has happened twice this week. So, I shut it down and restart. What causes this?
