Q: How do I get my HP Laser Jet 6p to work with OSX 10.8.2?

Somebody out there must know the answer and if so, please let me know. How do I get my HP Laser Jet 6p to work with OSX 10.8.2?

It prints, but does not print the preview. It prints the following:

%!PS-Adobe-3.0

                        %APL_DSC_Encoding: UTF8 % APLProducer: (Version 10.8.2 (Build 12C2

I am new to mac and if there is any help, laymans terms would suit me.

iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2012), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

    On further investigation I found:

Driver Name HP Laser Jet 6P

    Driver version 19.3

In addition to 'driver version' - it offers 3mb

                                                            4&5 mb

                                                             6 mb or more

Does this offer a possible explanation why I have a problem ie it does not specify drivers?

If you know the amount of memory in your printer (test print), you can then set one of these values to reflect that amount or range. This would help with larger print jobs exhausting memory if this setting was too low.

So, is your printer now working?

I've done a a Sel Rest which show total memory to be 2mb. My imac has it as 3mb with the option of increasing it to 4/5mb. It does not have the option to reduce it to 2mb.

Meanwhile, whilst it immediately responds to print, it still prints the same jargon it first printed!

Further research has led me to believe that I need to change 'Data Encoding' and re-save file to ASC11 format. I fully admit that I do not understand what this means and wouln't know how to set about doing it?

    Any ideas on this?

Time to dig the PDF manuals out for this printer here.

The good news is that my printer is now printing what it supposed to. Have reinstalled CUPS +Gutenprint v5.29

the printer is now doing its job. Well, not 100% because it only prints out the document/ documents for the one job and then fails to print on the next job.

I've checked printer settings, and have not been able to get it to print more than one job at a time. For the next document, I need to close down my mac and start it up again. I must be missing something???

    Hi Don,

Since the Guten drivers are not working out for you, you may want to take a look at HPIJS.

    Hi Garland

Will this require me to uninstall Gutenprint before installing HPIJS?

Thought that I should say, and I hope that I'm not being too premature, that my printer is now behaving and prints exactly what's in the preview and prints every time. If it decides to misbehave, I will be back on to the forum.

Switching the printer off and the imac off, and then switching on the printer and then the imac seemed to do the trick. Fingers crossed!

Thank you to all that particpated in my quest to sort this problem.

Hello DonMigell or anyone in the wider community out there,

I am interested in this topic and I read all its postings but I am still confused.  I think I have the same problem but your postings of Feb 1, when it did NOT work, followed by the one on Feb 6 when IT WORKED have nothing in between.  How did you make it work?

I also have an HP LaseJet 6P.  When it was hard wired to my PC (Windows Vista) it works fine. Now I am a novice MAC owner and I am trying to make it work on the MAC with Mountain Lion OS X10.8.4.  I am getting similar kind of garbled stuff on the first page:

    %!PS-Adobe-3.0  Query

                                     userdict (\004)cvn{(\004) print flush}put

                                                                                             %%?BeginFeatureQuery

followed by an unending stream of blank pages. Please share from your experience. I did a selt-test on my printer and it has 2 MB of Memory (SIMM slots 1, 2, and 3 are empty).
