Q: iTunes asking for backup password???

I am upgrading my iphone 4 to iOS 5. I backed up my phone (via iTunes 10.5) and downloaded and installed iOS 5. I am now going through the setup process and it is at the "Restore from iTunes Backup" step. I connect to iTunes and iTunes is prompting me for a password to "unlock your iPhone backup file." No I did not encrypt the iPhone backup, nor is it or was it checked in iTunes. I have tried my iTunes password, my 4 digit unlock code for the iPhone, and several other passwords. When I did the backup an hour ago I was not asked for a password. I am at a loss as to what it is.

on itunes with device plugged in go to the summary page and look at encrypted back up its not gonna be checked because anytime its checked and a password is set it resets and box isnt checked anymore when a back up is made. If you can remember the password that was put there for encrypted back up it will allow you to get that back up

and for those people that claim they never checked the encrypted box try your passcode lock password and if that doesnt work THEN YOU CLICKED THE BOX maybe you didnt do it your self but it means thats THE BOX WAS CHECKED AND WITHOUT THAT PASSWORD UR NOT GETTING UR BACKUP. Stop being in such a rush and actually know what your doing before you do it

As frustrating the problem was becoming, your suggestion worked like a miracle for my iPad 2.

I was upgrading my iPad 2 on my Mac to iOS6 post which all this trouble began, when I did not set any password for backup, iTunes was asking me for a password to unlock the backup restore !!!!!

Finally after reading and trying a lot of solutions from this thread, what worked for me was my iTunes password all in small and without numbers, phew !!

All the best to you guys.

also this is somehow connected to the passwords you had when you were making this reserve copy. so that means that i am supposed to remember the password i used to have .... or! or, it doesnt affect anyhow the icloud reserve copy. does it mean that apple wants everyone to use only icloud, which has free only 5Gb, so to make it happen you have to buy a storage plan.. starting from $20 a month..

I had same problem.  I guessed that the default password (again I never set it) would be my AppleID password and perhaps the the backup would make a simple error in setting it. My password is mixed case alpha  and numerals.  I tried with all lower case alpha and the same numerals and it worked.

So Apple it is a bug

Setting a password without telling the user

Coding error down casing a character

Shame itunes, ipad, iphone etc.  You should know better!!!!

Thanks for this.  I've been looking all over for an answer to the same question.  I had to take my iphone in because the camera was broken so I did a backup just before I went to the Apple store.  I didn't select encrypt; iTunes did not ask for a password when I did the backup, just as it has never asked or a password.  When I got home with the new phone and tried to restore from the backup, it asked for a password.  Of course, my iTunes/.mac password did not work, nor did the passcode lock I had on the phone.

After reading this, I tried to remember what my password was when I set up my itunes account.  Fortunately, I got a new computer about a year ago and set up a new account at that time so I didn't have to go back too far in time.

Bottom line, using a password that was changed a year ago worked to unlock a backup that was made today with no password.  This looks like a major F#$% up on Apple's part.  Backup with no password should = restore with no password.  And if a password is required, that should = use current password.

    Thank you.

    Craig

I am also being asked for a password. I had an iPhone 4 with AT&T and switched to Verizon and am using the 4S now. I did a backup before trading in my old phone and did NOT select encrypted back up. I also had a ATT I phone 4S that I upgraded to verison iPhone 5. No issues restoring from a backup on the iPhone 5. When I first connected the new 4S and tried to restore from a back up it did say something about not having the most current iOS so I had to update and then do a restore. I followed the instructions and then went to do restore from back up and I keep being asked for a password. Apple Support is no help, 0000, 1111, 1234 all do not work. Such a disappointment to not be able to back up and lose my messages. At least I was smart enough to download all the pics and videos first so all is not lost.

I ran the elcomsoft program, the free version, and got the two letter hint and the number of characters.  I just started guessing random words that matched, and got one... NO WAY has any password of mine ever been that.  I have no idea where Apple got that password, unless it randomly picked something out of thin air.

I highly recommend the program, it was easy to use and quick. Hopefully now, I haven't opened my computer up to some crazy virus...
