Q: Why does my G4 Audio Digital slows on Verizon 4G

I am trying out the Verizon 4G LTE wireless router/ modem broad band.  i successfully configured an older Gateway PC with Wndows XP to the verizon wireless with a USB wireless Realtech insert 802.IIn into the USB.  Both my PC and G4 has been connected by the wire connection from the CLEAR brand WiMax with reduced signal strength due to my area.  However the G4 has real fast speeds on the CLEAR connection.  After downloading the Airport utility for 10.4.11 Tiger for the G4, and successfully having the G4 connect through the Verizon 4G LTE with 3 bars out of 5 signal strength, with the Realtech USB pick up for the wireless Verizon 4G, the G4 machine slows to dial up speeds. Keep in mind the USB insert for the wireless on the Mac was connected by a USB multi port extention with the key board and pointer ( mouse )  However the PC increased in speeds.  What might be slowing down the Verizon 4G on the Power Mac G4 Audio Digital, or why is the Audio Digital slowing down on the Verizon 4G LTE wireless? Why would it be faster when it is connected by cable from the CLEAR ?

    Hi,

Is it slow loading pages, or by a speed test?

What do you get for raw speeds here, for both Java & Flash, DSL Reports...

    Hello,

This is really interesting to me about the loading webs on my G4 with wireless, of what i would describe as simple web sites.  The loading of the pages for a web site: say for example my bank, it takes a loong time for the first web page or the site to fully load.  I have not used the speed tests and not sure what they are when I use the link.  I had gone to the speed test and it did verify the Java plug in.  However, this was done using the DSL direct line and not the Verizon.  So lets see if I can access the Apple discussions through the Verizon:

For this disscussion entry i have connected to the internet by way of the Firefox browser with the verizon wireless 4G LTE.  The Apple site pages seem to load at a reasonable speed, and fully load at this moment.  The USB Realtech Plug in 802.IIN or USB wireless 2.0 is now plugged directly into the USB port and not a wired USB hub, the computer is turned around so the back of the unit is facing out and close to the wirless Verizon JetPac as it is called.

Once again connected to the Internet by way of the Verizon 4G wireless, the connection seems to be holding to use the Firefox version 3.6.28 which is the highest I can use for the OS X 10.4.11.  The test spped for the FLASH  are 2031 Kb/s download    and  657 Kb/s  upload  Comcast Washington DC server at 6:30 AM  and a second test  from Net Access from NJ, was 2035 Kb/s  download   and 437 Kb/s upload approx. 6:35 AM.  The connection and speed seems to be holding for the apple discussions

For the sake of discussion, the G4 Unit is now pulled out from under the desk, turned around.  I can feel some of the warmth of the cooling fan because the back is towards me.  I want to make sure the unit is cooling and not over heating.  I do not know if this would slow down the computer internet, but It can't hurt.  The G4 does sit on wood blocks to hold it up off the carpet.  But the under desk has a closed back and space under the desk is allowed for the back of the computer.  Question.  Does the newly downloaded Airport utility for Mac OS X Tiger and the machine, with the USB for wireless and the wireless modem all have to get in sync for the connection to hold and pages load properly on the web?  Does this take some time and trys?

Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712

Is that Interface dragged to the top of Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations and checked ON?

The Interface that connects to the Internet, needs to be drug to the top of System Preferences>Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations and checked ON.

Then... Try putting these numbers in Network>TCP/IP>DNS Servers, for the Interface you connect with...

    208.67.222.222

    208.67.220.220

    Then Apply.

the connection seems to be holding to use the Firefox version 3.6.28 which is the highest I can use for the OS X 10.4.11.

TenFourFox is the most up to date browser for our PPCs, they even have G4 & G5 optimized versions...

SeaMonkey seems pretty fast also, with many options...

Hello    Thanks BD for Joining me...  I do understand this is a computer which is over 10 years old.  However, when it works, it is my preference over a PC with XP and another new Dell with Windows 7.  My G4 came from a university newspaper, with a clean OS,  How I remember balancing it on my back bike rack as I walked it and the bike home. It's been a great computer.  It is a tough one, which is so big and strong it actually can be used as a seat or stool to sit on. I love it's looks, the handles to carry it, the way the case opens up, and the inner protections. My G4 Digital Audio is like a best friend. Another thing I was thinking of this subject : could this little USB Realtech 802.IIN which is really a spec larger than a car plug in fuse under the dash;  could this pick up for the wireless really be too weak at times? ( and /or ) The signal is not all that strong for wireless or Clear WiMax down at my end.

The Clear Wire is the WiMax connected to the computer by a DSL cable .  The Realtech 802.IIN is a USB plug inserted into the USB port for the  Verizon wireless 4G LTE.

When I disconnect the DSL Cable from the Wimax and insert the USB Realtech.  is this an Ethernet when I make a new Connection in the Network set up?

You install the drivers 1st, reboot, then plug in the dongle, then in 10.4.x you go to...

    Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations

You should get a Pop-up saying New Port detected, say OK, it'll likely call it something like USB Ethernet (en3) or such... have you gotten that far?

Here's what happening.  I made a new location " Verizon "   and the show is Ethernet Adaptor (en2)  right now the G4 is woking on the verizon 4G LTE wireless.  The DNS numbers you have provided for the DNS Servers.   There is the box listed as optional, but how are the numbers entered?  one at a time or with a coma?

In 10.4.x you can copy & paste both at once, 10.5 & up you can only paste one at a time.

Let's see, as I recall that Optional box is for Search Domais, & text like opendns.com, not numbers.

yes the drivers and the reboot was done yesterday.  but its over there working. There are many factors i am sure.  I wonder if signal strenth and time of the day matters with the Verizon 4G LTE wireless?
