Aperture 3 Library Issue - Aperture 3.4.5, OS X 10.8.4, memory 8 gig, 2TB external hard-drive. “MAIN APERTURE LIBRARY” is my primary (default) library. It contains around 12K photos. I’ve cleaned out the dups and deleted some junk. I “think” this is a so-so solid library. Issue #1 (too many libraries):  When I go into Aperture, File, Switch to Library, Other/New - it lists 7 libraries, which includes my MAIN APERTURE LIBRARY and an iPhoto library, plus 5 OTHER Aperture libraries. These 5 OTHER Aperture libraries show the following photos - 25,476, zero, zero, 8,891 and 2,420. How do I delete the empty libraries? Issue #2 (merging):  Using my Main Aperture Library - I go into Aperture, File, Import, Library ... It only shows 3 libraries (grayed out-Main Aperture Library, Aperture Library and Archive to Aperture Library). I’ve tried merging Aperture Library and Archive into Main Aperture Library, but they just don’t merge into my MAIN AP Library or go away. Regardless of which library I try to merge into another library, all of the photos from one library do not merge from one library to another. So now I am stuck with using 2 primary Aperture libraries to see all photos. I would like to end up with one library that contains ALL photos from all libraries. Big thanks ... Bob

Merging one library into another will never delete the first library. After the merge, if you are sure you want to, you can delete the library that you merged from.

How do I delete the empty libraries?

You delete libraries in the Finder as you would any file, select it and more it to the trash.

the 2 empty libraries do not show up in the FINDER. They only show up

when I go into Aperture, File, Switch to Library, Other/New.

That list may contain files that no longer exist on your computer anywhere - it only shows files that once have been opened in Aperture and is no evidence, that the files still exist.

The menu item "File > Switch to Library" is populated from a list of recent files called "RecentLibraries", stored in the Aperture preferences file "com.Apple.Aperture.plist" in the "Preferences" folder in your "Home" folder. This list may contain links to older libraries, that have already been deleted. Aperture does not check, if the recent items actually still exist, before presenting them in the menu. No Apple program does check this, btw.

For example, in my "com.Apple.Aperture.plist" I am seeing this, when I open it in Xcode to check the XML entries:

    XMLScreen Shot 2013-09-12 at 06.25.37GMT+01.00.PNG

And the menu items are showing this list:

    MenuScreen Shot 2013-09-12 at 06.27.59GMT+01.00.PNG

But the library "ToDeleteEmptyAperture Library. aplibrary" is already in the Trash.

Try the last entry in the "Switch to Library" list "Clear Menu" to remove all entries.

Then the old, non-existing libraries should be removed from the list. But a warning - the list will be completely empty afterwards. So you have to remember, where your Aperture libraries are to open them; either by double clicking them in the Finder or launching Aperture with the "Options⌥" key held down.

    Regards

    Léonie

I go into Aperture, File, Import, Library ...

o.k., that is how it is done.

It shows 3 libraries (grayed out-Main Aperture Library, Aperture Library and Archive to Aperture Library).

The grayed out Main is o.k., if you are currently viewing the Main library.

But if you are only seeing Aperture libraries and not a File Chooser dialogue it looks like you were openeing the "File > Switcht to Library" menu and not the "File > Import > Library" menu. Are you sure you tried the correct menu item?

I’ve tried merging Aperture Library and Archive into Main Aperture Library, but they just don’t merge into my MAIN AP Library or go away.

In what way do they not merge into the main library? What should happen, is that all projects, albums, etc. from the imported library should appear as new projects in your current main library. Don't you see any imported projects? What exactly happens when you try?  Do you get prompted, if you want to add the library or merge it?  Sorry, I do not understand yet what is happening when you try to "Merge".

    or go away.

The merged library will not go away. Aperture will copy the image files into the main library, but not delete the merged from library, as Frank Caggiona explained already.

Export the project as library from the source library and import that library into the destination library.

This will bring over all the originals, versions and metadata in that project.
