Just wanted to say I picked mine up today from the Apple Store and my first take is that it runs flawlessly. I had the 15" MBP and had the whining issues; this has none. Everything looks and sounds perfect. the screen real estate allows me to keep two documents side-by-side, which is good because I do a lot of editing. What a machine!

MBP 17/2.16, Mac OS X (10.4.6), PB 15/1.5, Mac Mini, iPod 5G, Nikon D200, Adobe Lightroom

If everything seems to be going well, you have obviously overlooked something.

    (J/K) Enjoy it!

    Best Regards.

    Thank you for the comment.

Now I can get more serious on my wishlist 17".

Did your Apple store have a good supply in or just a couple that went to folks already on a list?

I'm planning to switch to 17" from 15.4" MBP. I went to Apple Store in Long Island yesterday and checked 17" Powerbook (the same size with 17" MBP) because there was no 17" MBP there yet. 17" PB was smaller than I had thought, and I found that it would not be that difficult for me to carry around 17" MBP although it is slightly heavier than 15.4". I will get a light bag for the 17" such as Tom Bihn bag, and there will not a difference of weight because my current leather bag for 15.4" is quite heavy.

I have a question for anybody.

Does Amazon.com offer the lowest price of MBP, which is lower than Apple's student price when we add tax? Can a graduate or college student have a different option to purchase an Apple product at a lower price than what I can find on the Apple website? I had purchased my MBP from the Apple online store, not from Amazon.com, because I could choose 7200RPM HDD (at this point, I think I just need 5400 RPM HDD because I mostly write papers, browse the Internet, and play games). Thanks.

WOW! I just got my 17" MBP at the Apple store today and it is incredible. No heat, no whine and just sweet goodness. There's not one flaw on this baby from what I can tell. There is such a difference from the 15" to the 17". I'm blown away by the screen size, but at the same time is doesn't look that much bigger than the 15" when the lid is closed! If you are one who is debating between the two, in my mind there is no comparison. Get the 17"

Thanks for posting this info. It helps so much to hear from people who don't have problems, as well as those who do.

They just had a few come in, and all were for people on the list. They didn't even have any on display (no need!)

Well I have to say, it will take some time to get used to this new form factor. I noticed that it does not fit in any of my old briefcases. And opening it up on an airlplane will be scary. But the screen real estate is amazing.

Also, I have to say, the sound is far better than either of my previous two Apple notebooks, the PowerBook 15/1.5 and the MBP 15.5/2.0. The MBP was much louder than my PB, but the bass is stronger in this 17" version. With it cranked up, I can hold it up like a boom-box! Well, sort of.

I have a 17" MBP as well and I concurr that the machine is perfect! Although I have a 15" MBP and did not have any of the problems cited by others. As much as I love the 15" MBP it is time to sell it on ebay! Hard to justify having both laptops.

How's the heat, both on the top and bottom? Do your palms get sweaty when you type?

    Congrats on a good purchase!

Hhhmmm... hope you're online. The Amazon rebate ends at midnight tonight.

As for your question about which deal is cheaper, check out this worksheet - http://www.mactelchat.com/showthread.php?t=50.

It allows you to compare Apple Store vs. Amazon vs. ADC, taking sales taxes and other Amazon promos into account.

Thank you for the great information. Considering the ADC membership, Amazon.com is still a good choice until midnight. I assumed Amazon.com rebate would be extended, but maybe not. I'm asking myself if I should place an order now. I wanted to hear more about 17" from the purchasers before placing an order.

No heat here. I'm running it on the battery and it's sitting on my lap. I did purchase the nifty neoprene sleeve by InCase (that material they use to make wet suits) and I have that insulating between my lap and the computer, but when I feel the underside of the computer, it feels fine. Of course, I'm just running two programs in a Parallels XP window, plus Excel, plus Mail, Safari, etc. Nothing too strenuous.

My 17" has the whine problem, heat problem, and flickering screen problem. You'd think Apple would make sure the problems from the 15" model wouldn't transfer over to the newer 17" MBP's. To all those who are considering the 17" perhaps you should wait longer until Apple troubleshoots these problems....

hahaha. JUST PLAYING EVERYONE!! My 17" beast of a machine is flawless. No whine. No extreme heat. No flickering. No warped lid. It's perfect. Had to reset the PMU and calibrate the battery a few times for the battery to charge, but now that that problem is solved, I have absolutely zero complaints. It was definitely worth holding out on the 15".
