Have had conversation with other imessage users but now they are blocked...their names are in red (but not all my contacts are). I have confirmed they still use iphone and imessage. Why are they in red, and I am unable to connect with them and them me? How do I re-activate them so that I can continue to connect using imessage?

The simplest explanation is that they only have one device such as an iPhone and that at the present moment it is not connected to the network.

The turning red and the messages about the person's availability are always the same, whether they have removed the Apple ID from iMessages or the iPhone Number, or the device is out of range of WiFi (the Mac version does not switch to SMS like the iPhone itself does).
