    Hi NagCS,

Oh no! That doesn't sound good. Hopefully your contacts were backed up to iCloud, if so you may be able to restore them using the following information:

    iCloud: Backup and restore overview

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4859

iCloud: Restore your iOS device from iCloud

    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12521

    Restore from an iCloud backup

    1. Go to Settings > General > Reset, then choose “Erase all content and settings.”
    2. In the Setup Assistant, sign in to iCloud, choose “Restore from a Backup,” then choose from a list of your backups in iCloud.

    Thanks,

    Matt M.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.

The difficulty in restoring iCloud data from a back up is that the back up is older than the current version on iCloud and anything that is restored gets removed again when an iCloud sync occurs.

    1. Ensure the device is connected to your local network.
    2. Start the restore from iCloud back up.
    3. Allow the devices settings to restore (watch for the confirmation of completion).
    4. As the apps begin to restore pull the connection to your router WAN port (the one that goes to the telephone point).
    5. Wait for the time out confirmation.
    6. Navigate to settings > iCloud and turn off contact syncing (keep contacts when prompted).
    7. Reconnect the router to the internet and let the restore process complete.
    8. Delete any iCloud contacts from iCloud.com on a computer.
    9. Navigate to settings > iCloud and turn on contact syncing (merge contacts when prompted).

May I suggest that you carry out a back up to iTunes before you try anything, that way should things become even worse, you can at least restore back to where you are now.

In regards to recovering deleted items such as this, you need to check your Recycle Bin on your PC or Trash or your Mac. It is for situations like these that you should NEVER setup these receptacles to delete immediately but leave them to be deleted at a later point manually which will give you some time to review the items and determine if you really mean for them to be eliminated from your computer.

Also, it is good practice in general to backup all of the contents of your computer to an external hard drive monthly, if you can. I, for one, make sure I not only specifically make a back up of the iPhone data (I just did it 2 days ago), I also make back ups of my iPhone Back Up files, iTunes Music Library, iTunes Library XML file, Microsoft Outlook Contacts (which I sync with the iPhone), and anything I create, edit or update as a file on my computer.

In this way you are able to recover lost iPhone contacts when it comes to trying to find ways to rescue iPhone files that have been deleted for any reason. File recovery is expensive, time consuming and can be inaccurate at best, especially when a good percentage of the files you recover can be corrupted and unusable. In a word, there are several ways to recover deleted iPhone data, you can have a try!

You can directly scan and recover contacts from iPhone 5/4S/4/3GS

Step 1: Connect your iPhone to the computer

If you didn't lose your iPhone, you can also use this way to recover your contacts. Connect your iPhone and run the iPhone Recovery program on your computer.

Step 2: Enter the device's scanning mode and scan it

iPhone 5/4S users don't need to do this step. You only need to click "Start Scan" to directly scan your iPhone for deleted contacts on it.

For iPhone 4/3GS users, you need to click the "Download" button on the main window to download a plug-in for your device. Then follow the steps below to enter the device's scanning mode to scan it:

    1) Hold your device and click the "Start" button.

    2) Pressing the "Power" and "Home" buttons at the same time for exact 10 seconds.

    3) Then release the "Power" button, but keep holding "Home"  for another 15 seconds until you get the message of successfully entering.

Whatever the device you use, the program will automatically begin scanning your iPhone for lost contacts after you doing the steps accordingly.

Step 3: Preview and recover iPhone contacts

When the scan is finished, you can preview all found data before recovery. Choose "Contacts" to preview, mark it and click "Recover", you can save all the contents on your computer with one click.

If for some reason you just need to restore your contacts, calendars, notes and so on, but not the entire system, click on the Restore Backup... button under Backups. Typically this data is stored on your iCloud account.

Failing the above working, you'd be getting this way to recover lost contact from iPhone.

It's easy to work well for me. So hope that it helps.

If your contacts is gone from iCloud.com there is only a few ways to possibly recover it.

The first things I would check is a iCloud Backup, a iTunes Backup, or a 3rd party email that may have contained the contacts. To restore from a iCloud or iTunes backup follow this link. This article explains how to restore a device from either back up.

Note if you have backed up since the contacts went missing, you will not have the contacts on the backup. Make sure you do not back up if trying to restore from a back up as this will back up the content without the contacts.

To get to the "Set up assistant" on an iOS device, you must go to Settings>General>Reset>Erase All Content and Settings. Once the phone restarts, you will be at the "Set up Assistant"

Gmail emails are very commmon sources for contacts and you may have been adding them to the gmail contacts without even knowing it.

When you synchronize your iPhone with iTunes then it automatically create backup of all data. As you say that you deleted your backup by yourself, then it can not be recovered with any manual method. There are also some reason by which stored data is deleted or corrupted due to some problem like storage disk failure, system problem and many more.

So if your data is important for you and you really want to know how to recover lost Contacts on iPhone and create backup of your iPhone easily. I also use the iPhone Contact Recovery software for same problem and I successfully solved my problem. I hope this tool also solve your problem.

Restoring from iCloud will let you get the lost contacts back, however, the restore will erase all the content and settings on your iPhone and all the data generated after the backup will be lost. So, generally, it’s not a wise choice. Fortunately, since you have iCloud backups, you can try to extract the contacts from the backups using an iPhone backup extractor.
