I think you will be able to share content from iPad to any ATV when iOS4.2 released in Nov? You can stream over airplay...
Not sure if this will allow photo displayed on ATV but will allow audio & videoiPad 3G 64Gb iPhone 4 Apple TV2

Strangely, AppleTV1 could.
I have to admit, I have the same gripe of the new Apple TV in regards to being able to allow the remotes of guests to be able to control my Apple TV. Fortunately this issue can be addressed via software so I'm willing to be patient for an update!Apple TV v2, Mac OS X (10.6.5)

I should be able to use my iPad with my own home sharing network at home, and with my friend's network when I visit. AppleTV2 can't do this.
I should be able to allow guests to control my AppleTV2 from their own devices. Apple can't do that either."
Absolutely not true. I have several friends with Apple TV Gen2s. When I visit their house the airplay icon on my iPhone allows me to show movies and photos right on their AppleTV2 with no configuration whatsoever. The only prerequisite is to be on the same wireless network with their AppleTV.AppleTV Gen2 / iPhone 4, iOS 4

Just bought Apple TV and was so disappointed that my wife and I couldn't home share both our libraries. Fortunately past experience told me to take heart and not assume Apple screwed up. Sure enough your post shined a light. Thanks again.Dual 1.8 GHz G5 & & 2.16 GHz Core Duo MBP & 2GHz Core Duo iMac, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

I, too, have the same issue. I was using a WD Live Hub (Excellent Device). Unfortunately, we had a lighting strike and it was fried. I decided to try Apple TV $99 rather than buy another WD $299. I guess you get what you pay for...
The WD Live hub allowed anyone on the network to send movies (Almost any format) and play them on your TV, plus it acted like a shared Drive to allow others to grab and/or watch them also from their computers.
Apple "Get in the Game" here please. Don't let WD put you to shame.

I'm at a friends house who has ATV (latest ATV). I'm on his network.
I can only stream stuff from my phone to his ATV that I did not buy from iTunes.
So I can stream fine a home movie or a movie I ripped.
I can NOT stream a movie that I bought from iTunes with my account (ie Despicable me) to his ATV.
Am I missing something? Or is this totally lame??
