I spent about an hour and a half reading this thread, Lawrence, and none of the posts told me how to 'fix it', unless youre talking about the people who want me to reset my phone and then shut off all its features, which is not a 'fix' for this bug, it is a temporary workaround and unacceptable. Thank you for your helpful response.

Lawrence I think you just can not understand the problem!!

I have restored my iPhone 5 17(seventeen) times as a new and the problem was NEVER EVER was solved. So your below comment is wrong...

    • Well, actually there is a fix that is gauranteed to work. Restore the phone as New, and do not restore your backup. This catches all of the possible causes.

And it is A PROBLEM!!! The thing you did not understand is that this problem is not ALONE!! There are several other battery drain issues on these ishits that can be solved by the methods told but the BIG PROBLEM can not be solves and it is an APPLE IOS PROBLEM!!!

And stop being smartA to people saying 91 pages of this thread. I personally read dozens of threads here and more in other forums and tried many times the all the solutions offered and then wrote here. Even after that when I find some time to do it I am restoring the my ishit to see if it can really be fixed but NOOO!!!

From my point you just look like a rude guy to protect the ishits like an Apple employee!!!

This is exactly what happened to me on Sept 12, before that my iphone had worked like a dream since last November.  Now I can sit and watch the battery drain before my eyes.  I never have Fb running and have mail on manual fetch. Apple gave me a new phone on 14th, still the same probem.  The techie did say if I restore from my backup I might restore the problem.  He obviously knew something and he was right!  It's as bad as ever.  I'm with zombie on this one, this is an Apple issue, not how we use the phone.  Maybe the new ios  on 20th may change something, I really do not want to have to reset and reinstall everything without using restore, having the restore from the cloud function is one of the reasons I have the thing in the first place.

Jools777, I'm in complete agreement with you and tired of zillions of repetive troubleshooting posts showing most of what I've done taking me nowhere and not focusing on what we feel is the real problem however our posts seem to be construed by some as non technical as one of mine was taken off and apparently I was banned from participating in that discussion however if I'm reading the TOS correctly if you begin a discussion of your own this can't happen to you and you have the right to remove the person from your discussion and ban them. If you would be so kind as to begin a new discussion or thread of your own I will gladly join you there and we can stay on the topic we feel strongly about and insure it isn't further cluttered with repetitive and useless information. I've stopped responding to those contributors. They feel as strongly as we do about our's and I don't expect a change so I feel it's just a waste of my time.

    Hello Everyone,

As there is no official explanation from Apple on this battery drain I personally got suspicious that they do not want to disclose some relevant information which they are trying to hide. Most probably they feature a non-original accessory detection and/or expiration date to their products.

There are similar kind of stuff in other electronics equipments. For example lots of new Digital SLR cameras detecting non-original batteries and drain high-currents from those batteries so that users should buy expensive originals and blame the cheap battery manufacturers. (Yes of course lots of cheap battery manufacturers rate their battery capacity higher than it is but those cameras really drain it to a much worse situation). Another example is of some printers detecting print cartridge fillings or again non-original print cartridges and stop using them and even completely make the printer out-of-order to penalise these behaviours. There are many other kinds of stuff in different electronic devices but this thread is not for that.

As Apple is also have been quite similar approachs to limit the users of the device to take full control of their device, there is a high possibility that Apple took some measures in the IOS to enforce original batteries and accessories to be used and that part of the software triggering it is buggy which leads to this battery discharge problem (and also few other issues depending on the "protection" features).

Having the facts that iphones are the only phones that do not have a user accesible battery, apple products need a special pentalobe screwdriver to open their cases, and many more proprietary stuff used in the devices to limit users to take control of their devices strenghten my opinion on the above.

Anyway these are just my thoughts after nearly 3 months of actively dealing with this discharge problems of more than a dozen iphones and few ones just turned off and can not be powered up. (these dead iphones can be powered up by resetting the fuse in the input power part of the phone and can operate normally till the battery is dead again then need the fuse to be reset again. I suspect this is to detect heavy use of non-original charging devices and make the device out of order by some software and maybe in addition of some OTP memory or protection hardware) Having those expereinces as a computer engineer working more than a decade on electronics and embedded equipments I suspect these kind of "special features" causing battery drain or completely shutting down the device but this is just a theory that can be worked on with special lab equipment, sample devices, some reverse engineering techniques and quite a lot of resources.

Hope Apple will really solve this problem and I can use my ishit5 more. But I am sure that if this will not resolved before the end of this year I will not buy any apple products for my family and will do my best to deter my friends to buy apple products and refer them better devices from other manufacturers/brands.

    Take care,

    Hey,

Did you recieve a new iphone cause of the battery sitution? If my iphone is 9 months old and I come into an apple store are they supposed to come up with some kind of sultion?

Also, My phone worked great and suddenly 2 days ago my battery started dying before my eyes. Even on standybe, when I go to sleep I have 100 % battery and 4 hours later its 22 %. I found out that if the Cellular data is turned off (since I have Wi fi at home) the battery dies much slower, but if they both are on, even in my house, it still dies like crazy.

Not to mention that outside it barely holds on for 2 hours before droping to the low 10 %. Anyone have an idea about the Cellular data issue itself? I tried to restore from backup and it didn't help at all.

    Thanks alot..

I have recently purchased an iPhone 5 32GB and previously was using 4S with iOS 6, i had faced the same battery issue most of the people are facing here but have solved the issue.

The issue is not with the iOS or hardware, as most of the people are saying you have to close all background running applications by double cliking the home button(for iPhone 4 4S) and sliding up for iPhone 5, turn off location services in settings>privacy, turn off GPS, limit all the notifications( i only keep notifications on for calls, fb and texts only), turn on automatic brightness or reduce to desired level ( i use upto 25%), i use all of my mailing accounts but keep them on manual donwloading whereas keep push messeges on for mails.

    Hope these tips help you.

I currently get around 13 - 14 hours battery life on continuous mobile data on

    hellooo!!!

If Wifi and mobile data both are turned on the cell would prefer Wifi first, so it means that mobile data would not be used which would not really effect the battery life.

    Kinldy check the following:

"The issue is not with the iOS or hardware, as most of the people are saying you have to close all background running applications by double cliking the home button(for iPhone 4 4S) and sliding up for iPhone 5, turn off location services in settings>privacy, turn off GPS, limit all the notifications( i only keep notifications on for calls, fb and texts only), turn on automatic brightness or reduce to desired level ( i use upto 25%), i use all of my mailing accounts but keep them on manual donwloading whereas keep push messeges on for mails."

Odd, then. I NEVER close background running applications (which are NOT running applications, they are Recently Used applications). I leave Location Services on all the time. I leave all Notifications on all the time. I have email set to Push for the accounts that can push. I also leave on automatic brightness, WiFi, Cellular Data and BlueTooth all the time. I also get 13-20 hours battery life.

This is the type of advice that led me to write my 'screed'. My phone drains in about 4-5 hours, regardless of what apps are running in the BG, what services I have on, and whether the phone is in standby or being used. This drainage randomly started one day (last Friday) out of the blue. Up until then, the battery would last 1-2 days with everything on and heavy usage. This is most certainly a software or hardware BUG, not user error. I'm open to the idea that it could be an app causing it, but I haven't installed any new apps lately, and if its an old app causing it I can't figure out which, or why, because theyre all off and most services to them are now manually disabled. The battery drains regardless.

Not helpful Naveed. I guarantee you that if you switch your phone off the battery life will increase exponentially...

Why do we have to compromise? Since when have we started to accept sub-standard as a norm. Bill gates keeps getting away with making us pay for upgrades that are in fact fixes of thing that did not work. Apple screwed up with the iphone 5 and they get away with it. I am convinced they know what the issue is and they are not telling anyone. My iphone 5 issues stopped after I took my third replacement phone direct to the shop in Covent garden (London). There, after 30 minutes, it was assessed and declared with a battery problem. This was a coincidence given that this was my complaint..dhuu. I was promptly given a new one and sent on my way. I do 1.5 days with it in home enviroment. If I go to London I get 0.75 day. So I guess 3G is the culprit.

I wonder why there is an iphone 5 S (S=same but a little smaller). Could it be a fix for a fundamental mistake by Apple? Why would they make the phone smaller? Perhaps because it is in fct a 4S which was working great.

My next phone might not be an iphone.

Dom1958, " Why do we have to compromise? Since when have we started to accept sub-standard as a norm" says it all for me. To see the extreme extent of troubleshooting phones we've paid someone else to do makes me feel like a fool. I could appreciate sleuthing out a minor problem here or there and watching the discussions of that nature fade away as the issues resolved but this isn't happening. I don't want to use anything but an iphone but I do want one that delivers what was promised and what I've paid for. The phone is beautiful and elegant like my other Apple products but doesn't function like them. Beyond battery problems people are also suffering with data spikes and are equally troubleshooting this problem while their carriers are pointing them to buy larger data plans or cap off their data when it maxes out long before it ever did. This has also contributed to battery drains for apps running that were never a problem before. I really feel it's long past time to put it in Apple's hands.

This cant be a software error as u say that it started since last friday as we have not received any recent updates from iphone which means that the iOS has not been updated any how and we are using the same iOS.

Maybe your device has gotten into a hardware problem (battery probably)...

Try reseting your device and then check the drainage.

If its the same then you should replace the device with apple or purchase a new battery instead.

probabaly you have a battery problem since i am getting a good timing on my iPhone 5...

You should concern with an apple service center.

Its the same with all smartphones, have used HTC, Nokia, Samsung, Sony all have the same issue..
