After seeing some comments about 10.8.5 not fixing the problem, I installed the update expecting to be disappointed. But when I tried to reproduce the problem after updating, I found that waking up the computer from sleep within 30 seconds while Chrome is running, does not bring the blackout anymore for my machine. Before the update, I was able to reproduce the problem 100% of the time with Chrome running.

So it seems 10.8.5 has fixed the issue for me, so far. Have to keep using it and see if it does occur again. Will report back after another week of use, or the blackscreen occurs again, which even comes first. Good luck, everyone!

Well, this has nothing to do with blackouts, but as happy as I am that 10.8.5 has fixed the blackout problem for me (so far), it also made the camera not detectable to third party applications, (e.g. Skype, Google Hangout). Works fine with apple applications like Photobooth.

**** man, when the camera thing happened to me yesterday i dismissed it for some temporary glitch. now i realize it completely stopped working on hangouts when i updated to 10.8.5.

the blackout was a minor annoyance to me as it happened only once in a while. i cannot even say for sure whether it's fixed or not as the blackout not happening yet is not a definitive answer. since it was not that common, it could still happen and nothing changed.

but the camera??? i will need that to be working on monday!!!

i'll go shout to the appropiate thread now.

Update wont be present by then.

The Skype-camera glitch........its a known issue on 10.8.5 ,  an update is coming.

    read this link:

    http://community.skype.com/t5/Mac/OS-X-10-8-5-Broke-Skype-Video/td-p/1891729/pag e/2

Make a major update to an operating system,.... and a hiccup is possible and thats it.

The 10.8.5 update updated a CoreMediaIO plugin that accesses the MBA camera, but didn't bundle the 32-bits version of it. Other (older and newer) versions of the OS do include a universal version (32 and 64 bits), but not 10.8.5.

This means 32-bits apps such as Skype or iMovie cannot load the plugin, making the built-in facetime camera invisible to these them.

    expanding on what plotinus said.

after i posted the comment i immediately went looking for more info on the camera bug and found this message with the exact steps to fix the issue while we wait for the official update

    https://discussions.apple.com/message/22979401#22979401

panic avoided, but i can't say i'm happy. 10.8.4 to 10.8.5 is hardly a major update

Yes as sberman suggested the camera file from a backup could overwrite the newer flawed file

    good catch from him

I don't have black out problem anymore. 10.8.5 seems to fix it.

This article is from 2012 and for the older MBA. As far as I know, no one accepted responsibility about this MBA 2013 and Chrome blackout issue yet.

Well, a couple of days without Chrome (using Firefox) and I have had *zero* blackouts.

I would guess I have had one or two every day until now: so IMHO I believe this is absolutely a Chrome problem.

Well, I will continue to use Firefox & *not* use Chrome.

So after the update to 10.8.5 I no longer have the black screen problem, hurah!

MacBook Air Aug 2013 13" 1.3Ghz core i5 (Build 12F37) and Chrome was running all day

I did a full 12 hours test about 10 on battery and not a single black screen event.

This is a first for this MBA since I purchased it  few weeks ago.

So its not a Chrome problem afterall.

I have lost access to the built in camera, but as discussed elsewhere on this chat

the support for Skype and Google hangouts was "accidently" removed by Apple with version 10.8.5

A subtle hint that apple wants you to stay on their ecosystem perhaps.

I tried the workaround (installing the previous library from timemachine) but that made me loose audio so I reverted back/forward again and now hope and pray for another update to give me video conferencing back.

As we have a few meetings planned this week I will revert to my Wintel PC for those until my £1000 Apple hardware starts working again

Out of the frying pan into the fire...

P.S. As a consequence we puchased a Samsung Ativ 9 for the company today, hopefully a less stressfull experience.

P.P.S. before you ask, no I won't return the MBA because I need an IOS system for appstore submission.

I stated that 10.8.5 update did not fix my problem, but with all the other reports of a fix, I thought I would poke around a bit more.

First, I uninstalled / re-installed chrome.  Problem still persisted.

Next, I deleted my chrome user profile: rm -rf ~/Library/Application\ Support/Google/Chrome/Default

I loaded up chrome, tested sleep, and it worked!  no hang when I put the MBA to sleep.  Then, I logged in with the same profile I was having issues with.  Success!

So, I'm happy to report 10.8.5 did fix my MBA Chrome sleep issue, I just had to delete my Chrome user profile.  Feeling so much better with this machine already.. not going to ruin it by trying my camera, not yet

I've been subscribed to this thread ever since I've posted... and I've since uninstalled Chrome on the MBA, and no longer experienced any blackouts. It's been a couple of weeks now since I've last had a blackout (and not to jinx it or anything), so I think it's been fixed.

That being said, I'm gonna unsubscribe from this thread

I'm not sure about the 10.8.5 update, but I hope this problem will be solved for everyone in the future!

You can install Chrome again after the 10.8.5 update

I have running Chrome now for 3 days and no more black screens.
