Q: Crashing Mac OS X and really slow start up

My Mac Book Pro with OS X 10.5.3 keeps rebooting.  I get a screen that states that the computer has run into a problem and must reboot.  When it reboots it takes a long time to start up.  After loggin in it asks to send a report to Apple about it crashing.  What can I do to prevent my computer from crashing.  During the times it has crashed I have had at most the following programs open: Safari, Mail.  So I am not doing strenuous computing.

I Mac 2.4 Ghz, Mac OS X (10.5.3)

Copy your users folders to a external drive as soon as possible, dont' turn off the machine.

If you have a problem with some files copying, they are likely over 4GB in size, copy everything else you can from your users folders (music, pictures, movies, documents etc.)

Your machine is likely dying, or will require the entire operating system/boot drive and software replaced.

OS X 10.5 is obsolete, so depending upon the model and it's year, it's wear and tear etc., depends if you get it fixed or just buy a new one and transfer your files to the new machine.

10.6 is still getting security updates, but no improvements.

10.7 and 10.8 are the latest OS X versions, but 10.9 is right around the corner.

So since your machine has 10.5, most of those era issued machines  are best left on 10.6.8 max for performance reasons and comaptability with older PPC based software your likely using.

10.7+ won't run PPC based code, so it's a huge cost buying all new versions of software, I advise you do so on a brand new machine rather than on a old, soon to be dead (or already is) one.

OS X 10.4/10.5 need to upgrade, 10.6.8 ok still

Take your machine to a local PC/Mac specialist, they are more willing to install Snow Leopard (OS x 10.6) than Apple will, also they can add more RAM than Apple will, plus do as you need within a budget.

Also they can do data recovery, which Apple doesn't do, if for instance you can't backup your files.

Only you know the condition of your machine, if it's been rarely used or not and your budget or capability.

Since your still on OS X 10.5, I'm assuming here your not very computer savvy, so your best in the hands of local professsionals who you can discuss options with.

If repair is too much for you, you might consider to get a newer machine instead of throwing money at a old one. But at least with local professionals, you'll almost 95% of the time have your data.

Look for a kernel panic log that you can post. See -> http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2546. Post the entire text of the kernel panic in a reply here.

That's the first step - we may be able to decipher if you're having a hardware or software problem.

Here is the most recent one.  There are 2 crashes one on the 9/11 and 9/15 plus 2 other panics.  Should I post all of those too?

Uninstall Kaspersky - it's known to cause kernel panics. If you feel as if you actually need AV software try Sophos for Mac (free) - I tested it for over six months and it caused no problems, whereas Kaspersky is a bear.

Be sure to uninstall according to the developer's instructions.
