Q: OSX 10.8.5 Update HDMI sound not output after source switch

Upgraded my Mac Mini this morning with latest update. Ever since, everytime I switch source on my TV from one to another, I'm not garanteed to have sound being output on my Mac Mini. Only solution is to reboot.

 

Am I the only one facing this kind of issue???

    having the same issue with my mac mini - after sleep no audio anymore on hdmi output

    To all having this problem:

     

    1. The discussions.apple.com site is for users to discuss issues with each other. Apple engineering does not monitor it for comments. To make sure the right people at Apple hear about your problems, use the http://www.apple.com/feedback/ page.

     

    Make sure you choose the right product category, like http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html for OS X issues, the right feedback type (like bug report), & include all the requested info with your feedback.

     

    Unless you have a developer account, this is the only way you can be sure Apple will hear about the issue.

     

    2. It is a good idea to try to rule out other possible causes of your problem, whether or not you send Apple feedback. Often, what seems like a problem caused by an update is actually one caused by third party add-ons to the system that either interfere with the update process itself or are not fully compatible with the updated OS once it is installed.

     

    This can be difficult to do because some third party software installs system modifiers like kexts, daemons, agents, startup items, etc. without explicitly telling users it has done that. One way to check for these items is with Etrecheck, a handy little utility written by forum regular etresoft specifically for this purpose.

     

    Posting the output of Etrecheck here can help users see if there is some add-on they have in common that might contribute to the issue -- or that there is none, making the case stronger that it is the update itself that is the culprit.

    Having the same issues here! Have updated my late 2012 Mac Mini to 10.8.5 and I can no longer hear audio when it wakes from sleep. Very frustrating!!

    FWIW, I have a 2011 Mini Server connected to a Thunderbolt

    display and do not have audio issues after wake from sleep.

     

    Also, FWIW, the switching of inputs of an HDMI monitor/TV

    from a Mini to some other device and back as caused audio issues

    of all sorts since 10.7 up to 10.8.  In my case wth a 2010 Mini I use as

    an HTPC, the switch causes the Mini to only pass stereo and a reboot

    is required for it to pass multi-channel (Dolby, DTS, PCM).  Haven't

    updated it to 10.8.5, so not sure if I would get full audio loss or same old,

    same old.

    I've just run Repair Permissions using the Disk Utility and things seems to be looking better. I can now put my Mac Mini to sleep and after waking it, I am still able to hear my audio (via HDMI). I've tried this a few times and each time, the audio continued to work.

     

    (I can't take full credit for the solution. Another user posted a similar issue and also just recently posted an update saying the repair permissions seemed to fix his issue.)

     

    Fingers crossed it keeps working!

    I went into energy saver in system pref. and selected so that the Mac mini never sleeps. I've also run the disk permission repairs but it said nothing was wrong. I'll see if not letting the computer sleep helps out . I've also noticed that all my external hard drives that were attached during the update have had their names changed to numbers and symbols as well as the date they were created changed from 2013 to Wednesday December 31 1969 and they were last modified Monday 31 December 1979. A western digital 3tb external and a seagate 4tb external. This update *****. Also heard because of the sleep issue you might have trouble with time machine running

    This is a shame, as much as i paid for a mac the least could could do is monitor serious issues on the forums...

     

    If they dont, then whats the point?

    Late 2012 base i5 4GB MINI   HDMI to Samsung t24b350 monitor

     

    I never had this problem until I installed OSX 10.8.5.  Sometimes it does go to sleep and the sound is OK, but this is random.  I did run Disk Utility to repair permissions but it has not fixed the problem, sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't.  As suggested, I will report this on the Apple feedback page.

    The point is that users can often help each other solve problems, even when <ahem> they don't provide the info requested/required to submit a feedback report the engineers can do anything with.

     

    Believe it or not, almost all post-update problems are caused by something other than the update itself. Because we users often have "been there & done that" before we can sometimes make an on-target, educated guess about the cause & cure of the issue, even when we really don't have enough info to be certain about it. (Engineers don't like to guess, probably because users -- and their bosses -- expect them to be right all the time.)

     

    It's always best to provide as much relevant info as you can when posting to these forums & looking for help -- we are not mind readers -- but even when you can't some users have pretty good instincts about what to try.

    Maybe you can help me, what was changed from 10.8.4 to 10.8.5 regarding the audio? Any specific kext? Anyway we can revert? If it worked fine under 10.8.4 and not under 10.8.5 then clearly something changed. I really wish we could fix the issue, its killing my work. I have no audio and i haven't ever used any 3rd party audio tools

    You have a large number of third party system level additions that could be causing problems, either singly or (more likely) in combination. The "[failed]" com.apple.xxx items listed in the Problem System Launch Agents & Daemons sections suggests something is interfering with their launch, which isn't good.

     

    I suggest starting up in Safe Mode & seeing if the problem still exists as a first step in trying to resolve it. If the problem disappears while in safe mode, you can be reasonably sure one or more of these additions is the culprit.

     

    In general, check all the third party items listed in the Startup Items, Kernel Extensions, Launch Agents & Daemons, User Login Items, & 3rd Party Preference Panes. Make sure each is something that you need & that it is the most up-to-date version available. (If you don't know where an item came from, try a web search on its name.)

     

    I strongly suggest that you uninstall any of these third party items you don't actually need, following the developer's directions for doing that to make sure you get all of its parts. That's because items that are by themselves OK may conflict with others, leading to unexpected results & complicating troubleshooting efforts.

     

    Note: You cannot safely assume that an item not directly related to an OS level function like sound won't have an effect on that function because of the complex interdependencies of OS level components. For instance, anything that affects the I/O (input/output) system could affect sound output, even if it only modifies some other I/O function. That's why there is no simple answer for your question about what was changed in the update that affects audio.

     

    Also, try the fixes already mentioned in this topic by other users. In particular, you may want to download & install the 10.8.5 combo updater (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1676). In your case, since you have so many third party items installed, I suggest applying it while in safe mode to prevent them from interfering with the update process itself.

     

    Finally, unless there is no workable alternative, it is unwise to 'downgrade' to a prior OS version, or to try and "mix & match" system components from different versions. The latest release contains fixes for security flaws discovered in the prior one. These flaws are now public knowledge, which means hackers may be able to exploit them, compromising the systems of users that have failed to update them. The "mix & match" approach has other problems as well: because there is no guarantee that the items will be fully compatible with each other, this can (& often does) cause other problems that are hard to diagnose or correct.
