Hi, I'm using a White IPhone 4, and each time I attempt to update my IOS via my phone (Settings -> General -> Software Update), my phone will get stuck at the 'checking for update' page, as in, it just keeps on checking for updates. Anyone knows how to fix this problem? kindly help. Thanks!

iPhone 4, iOS 6.1

Its advisable to update ios through itunes, I mean using your macbook nor pc/lap. As the os will settle properly to your device and will give a better performance when you update from itunes conecting your iphone to the computer. And dont forget to backup your device before updating.

We dont have assurity on that, as per the words of apple care for safer side we need to backup the device and so if we lose after update, we can restore it.

Shut down all your apps and restart your phone. There won't be any problem updating over wifi if your connection is fast enough. I've done this with the last 2 or 3 phones I've had. However right now or when they release the software there will be millions of simultaneous downloads going on so you may see a spinning wheel for a while. If you do just wait till later in the day or evening. And have yor phone plugged into a charger when you do.

I haven't synced or updated an iOS device using iTunes in quite sometime, and have had no issues. Other than a potentially speedier download, there is no real advantage to doing so. But I do agree a back up is essential.

On what do you base this assertion? What does "settle properly" mean? The only advantage I know of to using a computer is if your short for space on your iPhone.

But, yes, back up regardless of how you update.

It may be unnecesary but I backup to both. If you have iOS6 you can back up to iTunes over wifi which is what I do and then when the phone is charging over night it backs up to iCloud. So really no need to physically connect the phone to anything unless you need to restore it.
