In case you  forgot the password your punishment is  iTunes backup turning useless forever ?

Not being able to turn off encryption without a password is  a bug, not a feature. iPhones are for normal people and, as ANY other Apple system, there should be a way to ID yourself again and continue using the backup on iTunes.

I do not want to recover old backups, I just want to do new ones and now I'm looking for other backup tool since iTunes is useless. Android do behave better on this, sure.

I faced same issue and i remember that i didn't use any password when I backedup my Iphone. Then I remember that I have used a new brrowser in internet while backing up. This brrowser asked me once to save my password when opening my email and I said yes. This backup used that password automaticlly so when i tried it the restore start working.

Try that it might work too with you!..

For me, this password was the same as my network admin password. I use it for nothing else. It never even crossed my mind until someone in this thread mentioned it. THANKS!

Another reason to use the same password for everything! Freaked out for about 20 minutes trying to use my unlock code, my apple ID password etc etc.

    Thanks,

This fixed me up. I thought it used the apple password, but it actually uses the passcode/lock code. At least it did on my backup.

Yes, it uses whatever you entered the first time you were prompted for it. In this case especially, neither Apple nor iTunes nor your computer have any idea what the lock code on your phone is, so you must have entered it.

I don't think that is a good assumption.  From looking at the reports it appears quite possible that any password could be applied, perhaps if you don't set up encryption the program automatically selects encryption and the last password entered.

I'll believe it's not a bug when they fix it so

    A) Encryption can be unselected

    B) Other backups can be created.

It's clear that a "solution" would involved invalidating old back-ups and being able to create new back-ups of current data with or without a password.

Hello, I confirm that the backup restore password is the password of the computer you are restoring from.

Only if that was the password that you entered when you first created the encrypted backup. If you read the other messages above yours you will see that it was NOT the password of the computer for most users. It was different for each user who was finally about to remember the password.

I had the same problem with my iPad. The solution was connecting the iPad to my computer with a USB cable and then using my password for my Apple ID account. Hope it will solve your problems.

See the message right above yours.

    Hello,

If I don't care about previous backups and I want to create a fresh new encrypted backup but I can't remember the original password, is there anything I can do other than what Apple indicates here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4946?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

If you cannot remember the password and want to start again, you must perform a full software restore and when iTunes prompts you to select the backup from which to restore, choose set up as a new device.

    Thanks

Well, no. It is the first password YOU used to lock YOUR phone. If you read some of the other messages in this thread you will see that it was NOT the first password that anyone else used to lock their phone. In fact, for each individual who eventually found the password it was a different password that had been used for a different purpose, or, in some cases, a password they had never used for anything else.

Why would Apple do this? You need to understand that passwords dont make themselves. For some reason theres a password now. Guess why? B/c people want privacy and decide to make a password, then they forget it and start crying about it. If im not stupid then tell me dont you guys hear from everywhere that YOU SHOULD WRITE YOUR FREAKING PASSWORD DOWN SOMEWHERE?
