Q: How do I get rid of "other" storage

@Ramjet7 I synced again and it's staying fixed. Just to clarify, I deleted those voice memo files using DiskAid. There were dozens of copies of each memo, so it looked like there had been sync problems at some time in the past.

Didn't work for me... just deleted all my music. I had my phone plugged into my computer and it still go rid of all of my music from my phone. Pretty mad about it.

@Ramjet7 - did you uncheck synch voice memos after deleting the voice memos from your phone and re synching?

@nicolepac - what specifically "didn't work for me" as there are several solutions offered in this thread to resolve the forum. If you're more specific maybe someone can help you

Yes, That is unchecked as is pretty much everything else.

I think it fair to say that I have experienced a large proportion of faults, bugs and iOS update issues mentioned on these forums. The one on this forum has been an issue on my iPhone4 since iOS 5 came out plus every update to 5.1.1 which I am currently using. I refuse to update to iOS 6 or go beyond my current version of 10.7.0.21 of iTunes

To preserve battery life and memory I have to seriously manage my "Smart Phone". 3G is only ever turned on when it's absolutely necessary as battery life goes down by 5% + every 10 minutes. When I first got my phone, with iOS 4, I loved it and it had amazing battery life but since iOS 5 came out I have to turn most "smart" features off as my phone's battery would be dead in half a day even without using it.

For those reading this and say I have a corrupted phone and need to restore it please don't bother to reply, been there, done that. Part of my job has been a beta tester of software and training people how to use smart phones and computers. I am the person people come to help solve their technical issues.

I could rambel on all day about my negative iPhone experiences but I'll leave that for another day.

Just waiting for my iPhone to actually die so I can buy another, non Apple, phone.

I started out with 2.8GB of other and your theory bumped me up to 3GB. Sorry, but it didn't work for me.

I wentin through iTunes on my 4th Gen. Touch and there were 6 or 7 voice memos not too big in size, ranging from 1.4 MB to 12Mb or so. I checked them all and deleted them and POW!

Other went from a bloated and ridiculous 4.XXGB to a still large 2,47 GB, but I now have 1.4 free.

Not sure why a hundred MB of voice memos take up 1.4Gb of space, but it's better now. Thanks Paul!

I had this same problem and had already tried deleting all my data and reloading it but it didnt make a dent in my "other". In searching around the web I found the suggestion DiskAid. I was skeptical to use something off the internet but I had 8GB of "other" stored on my Ipod that really needed to go. All I did was download and install the program onto my computer. I found that under Recordings I had 15 duplicate 30 minute long recordings. I deleted these and now my "other" section is down to 864MB!

Hey all! This little trick worked for me (iPhone 4). Plug your device into your computer, click on the button in the upper-left corner of the window. Then, click "Restore iPone".

Note: This will delete every item from your phone and will restore it to its "factory" conditions, best to back it up first.

Then, once you have synced it with your computer after it finishes restoring, click "update". It is right next to the "restore" button previously used. This will update it to the lastest model in software.

Other information:

-This process will take a long time, because technically you are repeating the process in order to update it twice.

-The area labled "other" is SMS, MMS, Contacts, Emails, etc. Deleting all your text threads will remove some of the "other".

I upgraded to iTunes 11 and iOS 7 last night. this morning i had 26 gigs of 'other' !!!

i read through this thread and the mention of voice memos rang a bell - i had problems with these a while ago.

i only had 10, and they were tiny - a few hundred k at most. and fortunatley i don't use them much, so i listened through them, made a note of anything that needed to be remembered, and then deleted them from my Mac. (search for voice memo under spotlight).

sync my phone.

fixed.

now my 'other' is down to a far less offensive 2.4 gigs.

This did NOT work for me. I had 4.5 GB of 'other' stuff before, and that's what I am having now, after deleting 8 voice memos. I have not had problems with voice memos previously, though.

My try with Diskaid resulted in marginally shrinking the 'other' stuff - luckily, I have not discovered any duplicates etc, so ended up deleting (many) older folders in 'downloads' and 'purchases' folders located in Media. Hope my iphone is still sane...

Ok, good to know. This "other" section consists of any space that is taken up by threads. So deleting text messages, clearing history and data from safari, etc. should get rid of this. Now that you say this is not working, have you tried resetting your phone? Keep in mind this will reset everything on it so back it up first! Process takes approx. and hour to an hour and a half.

Holy moly, I'm so grateful to you, Carrot man! This worked for me:

::First you go settings/general/usage/music/then left swipe over music and press delete and you would think it deletes your music but it dosent insted it deletes your other but make sure your ipod is connected to a computer wile doing this

What a strange, annoying problem with a completely counter-intuitive solution. I realize it's not working for everyone, but it's worth a try. As long as you have your music backed up somewhere, it's way worth it.
