Q: iTunes asking for backup password???

I am upgrading my iphone 4 to iOS 5. I backed up my phone (via iTunes 10.5) and downloaded and installed iOS 5. I am now going through the setup process and it is at the "Restore from iTunes Backup" step. I connect to iTunes and iTunes is prompting me for a password to "unlock your iPhone backup file." No I did not encrypt the iPhone backup, nor is it or was it checked in iTunes. I have tried my iTunes password, my 4 digit unlock code for the iPhone, and several other passwords. When I did the backup an hour ago I was not asked for a password. I am at a loss as to what it is.

IT'S YOUR COMPUTER'S PASSWORD, I tried everything else, my iphone passcode, my apple password, none worked except for my computer's password if it doesn't work, unplug the iphone and plug it back in and put the computer's password it will work...

To elaborate on pjlove's post, it was actually my computer's password that I had used when setting up my previous phone. You will need to use your computer's old password if you changed your password since then. I'm fairly certain this is the case since I've never used my computer's previous password for any of my Apple accounts. In short, use the same password you used to lock your computer whenever you initially set up your previous phone with i-Tunes.

I figured it out!  I too had never set a password, but it kept asking for one when I tried to restore from backup...

Plug in phone;click on the iPhone icon near upper right hand corner of screen;click on summary tab;under "Backups" click the box "Encrypt iPhone backup", this will prompt you to create a password, which will then work when you go to restore again.

Even though you had never selected to encrypt in the past, it still prompts for a password - simply go in and create the password, then you can use it!!

I hope this works for other people having this problem. I tried many passwords to no avail but in the end it turned out to be the password of the email linked to my Apple account. Thanks and good luck!

Guys, this is real nightmare! I faced same problem: never set encryption password but it asked for the password at restore. By that I locked my photos and videos for more than a year. I thought better about Apple. Such a stupid bug!

I did not believe it is possile to restore. Tried many passwords, real case and lowercase, as suggested: my current Apple ID password, my windows login password, all the passwords I use now on my memory. But nothing worked!

Eventually I found the solution! This is my old password from Apple ID! I changed my Apple ID password some time ago because I forgot it. Now I searched my notes and found 2 old Apple ID passwords. I tried both and the last one before the current on has fit! I did not convert it to lowercase, just used it as is.

So hopefully this should work for everyone of you, provided that you DO remember your previous Apple ID password. Otherwise I am sorry..

I just tried everything in this chain. I think if you have an apple and you synch your iPhone more than me :) then you could retrieve  it using the application / Utilities/ keychain/ then make sure "all items" are checked on left and then using the search bar you type in "iPhone backup password". When I did this no iPhone backup came up, but there was a ton of other passwords in my keychain that were saved. All my exchange accounts and other passwords the computer saved.

Since I did not find it I literally took someone else's advise and entered in every password I had EVER used on any type of email/pass code, ect. And after about 50 tries I found it. I cannot believe that apple has done this. This is awful!

    Good luck everyone!

    DITTO

ITUNES IS FINDING SOME PASSWORD SOMEWHERE AND PLUGGING IT IN

    @#&*&(%*&^%$%$@!!

    or words to that effect

This creates a circular refusal to remove back up encryption on FUTURE BACKUPS!

Summary-> Backups->Encrypt iPhone Backup  CANNOT BE TURNED OFF

I am unsure if it remains if you reload itunes after a deletion, but you sure would lose all the other itunes configurations and playlists

Just spent 1 1/2 hours online with apple care who had me purge and restore iPhone, unfortunately to no avail.

Fortunately you can try passwords to your heart's content and (thanks be to the heavenly grid) one finally worked. on try #73

For me it was one I generated on the iphone when it installed iOs 6.1.3

Similar to Msagatov's situation and  fix

This is cruel and either the result of a bug or an encouraged error/choice that is not explained

Thank everyone for tips as to where to look for stored obsolete passwords.

Thank fully I was not locked out of a backup, but ability to restore from a back up is a frequently omitted step in confirming that you have actually backed up

I had the same problem this is how I solved it

    1. Down loaed the following software from PB:  elcomsoft posted by mrriser007

    2. After installation use the provide serial to register or the program will only give you half the password

    3. I used the brute attack numbers fom 0-9 five dights

    4. Got my password in like 4 secs. "5842"

    5. Where this number came from I have no idea, maybe an old password?

    6. Thanks to kennymix for the software suggestion I just got a older version with the serial

    7. Always scan all down loads with a anti-virus before opening

    HOPE THIS HELPS

Like everyone else, I was shocked to see the Restore ask for a password, since I had never entered a password for backup to iTunes. I tried a bunch of passwords and kept getting "Invalid password" errors. Finally (and luckily) the one that worked for me: the password of the computer where my iTunes connection is.

Ok, I was shocked to see I had set a password to my backups and after trying dozens of possible passwords I realized that it was the password of the computer where I am, but not the latest updated password, one that I had set about 1 year ago... strange...

Either way: my recommendation is to try ALL passwords that you used before to access to your computer's session where your iTunes is installed in (mine was an iMac).

    Good luck to all
