This was fixed on my phone just by opening and closing the Calendar app.

I guess I did one other thing... Open calendar.. and click the  +  to add a new entry.

Let me know if that works.

I had the same issue. This is how I solved the problem:

Open a music video or movie and check to see whether the video/movie is playing on an AirPlay device ie, AppleTV or portable speakers.

If playing on portable speakers (in my case Bose system) plug the iPhone in and then play the video/movie, press the AirPlay button (bottom right corner) and select "iPhone" from the list of devices.

After this the sound should return normally to the iPhone.

I had the same problem in two devices 4S and I got fix it this way:

1- Play any song from the Controller Center (Sliding from botton to top with the screen block) using the Earphones.

2- Disconnect the earphones, (The song will stop), and then whitout the Earphones press play again..

3- Fix it.....it should sounds now.

    I hope to be helpfull....

    Un saludo.

My wife had the same issue with her iPhone 4.  The vomlume bar was grey inside the music app and the buttons didn't work.  I knew the speakers were fine because it would play the ringtone under the sound menu.  Headphones worked just fine.  I carefully cleaned out the charging port with rubbing alcohol while the phone was off.  When I turned it back on, it works!

    Hi friends

I started to remove apps one by one and restart after removal

    And tada !!!

After removing "soundcloud" app volume and sound came back

I rechecked it installed once again - got same bug with volume

    And removed it forever :)))

Fixed for me by me :))

    Nice ios!!!

I have the same problem on 4S, sound is fine on headphones but the volume slider disappears when I disconnect them. None of the solutions above worked.

Reinstalled iOS 6.1.3 and everything works like it used too, updated to iOS 7: problems return. I tried several times to no avail, guess I'll stick with 6.1.3 for now...

I have had the same issue but it seems to have been sorted after going on to the App store.

There are a lot of Apps that need to be updated due to the new iOS and once all updated it seems to be working normally with no issues.

Give it a go and let me know.

So I took the suggestion of playing a video.  Amazingly I played a video, had sound, and then everything started working.  Unfortunately it's only a "temporary" fix, as after I restarted my phone it started acting up again.  At least I have a temporary workaround to get it to work until the issue is resolved.
