Suggest you upgrade to the latest possible version of OSX and upgrade Pages 09 to its latest possible version.
With some caveats depending what is the most recent OSX you can install.

Why update to the latest system version, Peter? Snow Leopard is a well functioning system. If we could get more information from the OP there might be an esy solution to the problem.

I tried all this but nothing worked, then I have tried to reinstall pages from the Iwork 09 disc.
Then pages came up but now it i get this error message
Pages cannot be opened because of a problem
Check with the developer to make sure Pages works with this version of Mac OS X. You may need to reinstall the application. Be sure to install any available updates for hte application and Mac OS X.

I was at the page for the work updates (Thanks Fruhulda), downloaded all i could see, installed them and now all the programmes are working.
