Reinstall the 10.8.5 update, this time using the 10.8.5 Update Combo. You can find it at:
Then after the installation open Disk Utility (Applications - Utilities - Disk Utility) and Repair Disk Permissions on your internal HD at least 2-3 times. Then retest.

Ok, I have restored my system from the most recent backup before the update... I used the combo update, just like I had done with the previous update... I now have access to all of my applications again, with the exception of my LumenRT plugin failing to function [inside SketchUp], but I'll work on that later. What troubles me the most is that someting is constantly reading and writing to my hard drive.
I also rebooted in Safe Mode. Everything seemed to be working just fine there as well. ...Even the persistent reading and writing to the hard drive.
The "kernel_task" [PID: 0] has been joined by "activitymonitord" of "launchd" [PID: 1] in their sendin and recieving messages by the millions - currently 27+/27+ million messages and 51+/25+ million messages respectively, and climbing... I've never seen this kind of activity before, even for system archiving. Any ideas as to what messaging activity might be going on here? That might help me discover exactly what's going on in there.
... The only applications I have running are Activity Monitor and Safari. The only Login Items I have are for Moom, CleanMyDrive, and BambooCore. I never had any problems with them before - I know that doesn't mean there couldn't be a problem with them now with the new update.
