I had same problem, but removing applications does not help to me. If does not work also for you please try remove all bluetooth devices (forgot device) in settings \ bluetooth. This helps to me and volume buttons works in all cases now.

OK, I am speechless now. Spend a whole day. Different methods to reinstall the OS, same problem.(even without restored setting and data/apps).

I have 2 iphone 4s, one HK version works fine. the other is UK version has this problem.

It might be a bug of OS or hardware firmware issue. Need 7.1 please

If I had hair I'd be tearing it out. This is happening to me and I have tried everything suggested. Reset, Restore, DFU everything

    Nothing works.

The sound comes back and works for minutes then boom gone again.

I hope this is sorted quickly!

I had the same problem.  I have been using a "non-apple" usb charger.  I just went out to my car, plugged my iphone 4S into my Apple USB cable and that fixed the problem. I now have all of my sounds back.  Could it be an engineered bug to sell more USB cables?

Well, I spoke too soon.  The fix I mentioned worked for a few minutes.  However, after locking the iphone and then unlocking it, the sound problem came back.  So, I'm still looking for a permanent fix.

Once I upgraded to 7.0, The same thing happened to me.  The sound would go out, sometimes come back, and then go out again.

So, I have had issues like this in the past.

I can reproduce this quite reliably by playing music, then opening the camera app to take a video (perhaps a photo will do it)

It could be something caused by applications contending to play sound, but I believe it is a matter of power -- either battery, or CPU.  I let my phone charge up all night which did not resolve the issue (as it often does).  I then disabled a couple things:  vibration on ring /email, and I think it was last night when I disabled background updates for apps.  I'm fairly certain that, however, is the key -- turning off background app updates.

How can we report our issue to apple? We really need a solution soon.

I have a 4s and the same thing happens to me. To my surprise, when I was in the middle of a call the music started playing! What a shock!

Now when I want to listen to music I have to make a connection and to play for the link ... that nasty!

Sometimes he keeps playing indefinitely, until i touch pause, sometimes not!

Does Apple is giving life to the iphone itself??? I hope apple fix this quickly!!

If you can succeed in getting their attention you'll be everybody's hero.

The same issue has been there since ios 6. I upgraded my ipad to ios 6 and I lost sound completely.

Note: if you test the notifications sounds from the settings you can hear them (so it's not a hardware issue)

It's just that music, videos, YouTube and all other sounds don't work.

Here's a whole discussion about the issue in ios6 if anybody is interested:

It is simple as 1-2-3. Just squeze  around speakers - left/right from the dock connector. And sound is back ... NICE! and that after 4 hours browsing the Internet reading no solution. Call BizClass Travel if you need discounted air tickets, cruises, all-inclusive vacations!

Same prob here...how'd Apple let this get thru, because it's not an isolated problem.

I have no idea how I solved the problem, or whether the sound is still on or not. I do know it came back following a restart. iTunes radio sounded worse than a '60's transistor radio, at first, too

I have the same problem. Everything works fine with headphones on. Headphones off, the only sound I get is from Facetime and the ringer. Basically none of my alerts work, music, videos and youtube. Tried all of the suggestions besides removing apps....frustrating.
