Upgraded to ios7, went to settings, usage, it took the phone a minute or so but then it displayed how much memory was being used by text messages. I had deleted most of my messages and picked through them deleting pics and videos.

Well turns out the running text I had with my wife for (?) years? Was GB's and GB's long on just the one conversation.

If you don't mind me asking, but why would you (or most ppl) want to keep a long running conversation like that?   Is there any value in having a record of everything you've said to each other?

I'm just trying to figure it out - you have no idea how many ppl I know who literally run out of 16GB of space by storing years worth of text messages.   I just don't get it.

So I went to backup today so I could download update after I finished, other grew another .08, and my photos did as well... I thought that was weird so I hovered over the photo part and it says I have 2951 photos on my phone.  I went to camera roll and it says 46 pictures.  So like I was saying earlier I think it's messed up somewhere and although I delete the pictures they're getting copied to other...

seems like I've been following this topic forever.  Mr. Luigi is all over it.

I've followed all the tips but never went as far as restoring as new or even using ifunbox or the like.

with install of iOS 7 my other decreased from 3g to 1.5g

Unless I'm misunderstanding your post, that's not correct.  You can restore as new without a backup, and then restore again to your prior backup if you want.  All you have to do is give the device a new name when you restore as new.

So I upgraded, and it showed me that I have 4.82g of documents and data, on the phone under usage it shows the messages as 4.4g.  This made no sense since I've been deleting texts as I do them for long while now.  Anyway I went through and deleted the big ones I still had and now I'm down to 4 gigs of messages but I only have messages with 5 people left on phone, and of the 5 I've cleared out the conversations inside 3 of them.  Two have conversation that consists of one reply and the other is some banter that include zero pictures and only go back maybe 20 or so texts back and forth.

So, where in ifunbox do I find this stuff?

Update: I had to backup and restore original settings and tried to backup with iTunes when I did that my other went from about 5 to 13.50 with me being over  because I only had 13.47 capacity. I had to restore original settings again and backup from cloud and it went down drastically and gave me 10 gb of free space!! But.... Sadly there is a but... As The day went on I tried to Dl iOS 7 and it kept saying I had to wait for iCloud backup to Finish but I though it the day went on my 10gb of free space dwindled and went from 10gb to 8gb to 5 gb to zero bytes. I got a notification saying I was out of storage after every single text message had been deleted and my photos stored was only 54.  I will attempt to restore again tomorrow. So very disappointed! I live an hour and a Half from the apple store. :/

I have an iPad that has sent or received like 2 texts EVER. Ehhh verrrr!

I have 1gig of other total.

    Updated to ios7.

Still shows 1gig of other and 900mb are in iMessage.

    This is totally lame ;)

Any chance you have more then one device that uses the same Apple ID? I noticed that any app that my wife adds to her phone shows up on out iPad that uses the same ID/ account by itself. Now that I think about it I shut off my photostream that was connected to her phone as well to create room for ios7. When I turned it back on when all was done it reconnected and added the photos

I did the nuclear option on my iPhone to rid myself of "Other" a few months back.   There were old SMS attachments pre-6.1 that never got deleted that was taknig up space.

I thought iOS7 would finally address the old orphaned attachments but they did not.  HOWEVER - the newest version of iBackupBot allows you to strip these old attachments from your iTunes backup file, and once you restore your device YOUR PROBLEM IS SOLVED!!!

On my iPad with iOS7, I reclaimed all of the space that was being used up by Messages (Now viewable in Usage) even though I had no messages at all on the device.    Reclaimed over 1GB of space.

I thoroughly suggest you read all of the app's instructions thoroughly, and ensure you make a backup of your backup (not kidding) but it's worth the effort if you really need the space.    Unfortunately Apple wasn't able to address it easier for everyone, but there is now a workaround.

    Good luck.

I have several devices that use the same apple ID. However I have iMessage turned off on the iPad.

So how I have a gig of iMessage space on an iPad that doesn't use iMessage is beyond me.

Apple needs to get a clue and simply allow you to swipe and delete iMessage data under general/usage.

So it wipes all your iMessages. My iPad2 is only 16gig. So space is critical.

since downloading ios7 ive tried every day to free up space by deleting all of my text messages and every time i delete the thread my messages freeze and it still says 1.2 gb of messages. I restart my phone and all my messages come back.
