Q: iTunes asking for password to unlock backup file?

I am upgrading my iPhone 4 to iOS 5. I backed up my phone (via iTunes 10.5) and downloaded and installed iOS 5. I am now going through the setup process and it is at the "Restore from iTunes Backup" step. I connect to iTunes and iTunes is prompting me for a password to "unlock your iPhone backup file." No I did not encrypt the iPhone backup, nor is it or was it checked in iTunes. I have tried my iTunes password, my 4 digit unlock code for the iPhone, and several other passwords. When I did the backup an hour ago I was not asked for a password. I am at a loss as to what it is.

    Hi back, everybody,

shame on me, I must admit, iTunes was right. Trying over and over again, I suddenly remembered a password I used to use some earlier times. So I tried it, and --- it worked. So at the end, it had been my fault.

I'd like to apologize for what I wrote about Apple and their engineers, sorry guys. The anger and deception about not being able to access your own data just makes you think and say things ...

Good luck to all of you out there, think about which older passwords you might have been using in former times.

BTW: there are applications, which let you get to the backed up data, but there as well, iTunes demands the password, if the back up is locked.

Today, i got myself a new device and was prompted with password request. Ive tried on pc password, vpn exchange password, 4 digits passcode, itunes password and all was wrong. Feeling upset, i tried every password i ever used for steam, emails etc.. and finally i solved by entering my MMO password! I am still thinking its ridiculous but also glad that i managed to restore backup to new device.

    So keep trying people....

    Merry Xmas 2013 to everyone!

So it seems that most of the inquirers in this thread think that iTunes uses some random password from the computer it is installed on.

Mine worked after several trials and several hours, after which I used my mail password. Yet I can not verify if I have used this password at some point when using iTunes, so the fellow inquirers here might as well be mistaken about the password being random.

    The Question is..

Why the **** wouldn't the Apple ID Password just work for iTunes??

    and most importantly..

WHY THE **** ISN'T THERE A "FORGOT YOUR PASSWORD" LINK???

Thanks wsucoug95, I finally solved this problem by using a passcode for unlocking my old iPhone 1 year ago!
