In that case, I have some doubts it is the preference behavior that Leonie describes -- but she knows a lot!

Could you post a screen shot of the actual  error alert. Sometimes seeing the error makes it easier to troubleshoot.

Let's see the screenshot that Frank Caggiano asked for.

It is weird, that the problem occurs after rebooting.

When that error comes up it locks up the screen so that nothing else can happen on screen until it is resolved, including getting a screen shoot. No matter what you click on the screen, nothing happens.

Take a Screenshot  with your camera

Since your Aperture library is not hosted on a server, do you sync with any web services - Flickr? Facebook? An old Mobile Me account? Do you have Places enabled?

No syncing and places is not enabled that I know of. Where do you enable it?

Open Finder->Preferences->Sidebar and enable everything under SHARED

then look at the sidebar for the SHARED heading what shows there?

If you had enabled it, it would be in the Aperture Preferences "Web" pane:

But your screenshot shows a remote disk volume.

Nothing in the web pane and in the sidebar all I have is Favorites and Devices. No shared category. Not sure I know what a remote disk volume is. All I have connected are external drives but the error happens even if they are turned off.

Does any of your drives have an icon like the one your screenshot? Screen Shot 2013-09-21 at 03.23.36MESZ.PNG

Are your drives directly connected by firewire, thunderbolt, or USB?

Is your Aperture library by any chance an old iPhoto library, that you previously used with iPhoto '11?

Did you have "Look for shared photos" or "Lhare my photos" enabled for iPhoto?

This gets more and more interesting. MY initial answers were No, No, and yes. Look for shared photos was enabled so I disabled it. Then I restarted and lo and behold that icon appeared for the first time. I have attached the Get Info from that icon. I believe Apple Qmaster is part of Final Cut Pro X which I do use. I have not disturbed the icon.

Right, that has to do with Compressor.

So you are running FC? Has someone wet this up? HAs there been any changes to the system recently?

You should be  able to control Qmaster from its System Preferences pane but exactly what you should do is hard to say not knowing your setup.

If you don;t know what any of this is you might be better off posting to the FCP community. There is a section dealing with Qmaster there.

    good luck

That's right, it is Compressor. Thank you for all your help, and everyone else's, and yes I will follow it up in that forum. I think it's ironic that there is some sort of conflict among Apple's own products. Oh well.

That symbol is the same as I see for my Mac Pro when it is connected to my rMBP.  Do you have another Mac on your LAN?

I also note that the Get Info is about something a storage formatted for NFS.
