Q: MacBook Pro 10.8.5 vs. AirPort Time Capsule.

Hi,

I ALWAYS have troubles since I purchased the VERY expensive AirPort Time Capsule. It's insane. I pass more time resetting the d__m thing than having an actual life.

Now, since 10.8.5, my MacBook Pro can't EVER connect to my AirPort Time Capsule.

AirPort Utility: "An unexpectd error occurred. Try again."

ALL THE TIME.

Reset. Unplug. Resed. Unplug.

Please help me!

Chris.

Is your TC the AC model?

Are you using wireless or ethernet to the MBP?

What are you unplugging .. that is power on the TC?

What are you resetting.. again that is the TC? What reset are you doing each time.

What mode is the TC in? How is it connected to the network? Is it main router or bridged or something else?

Can you please make sure the names are all short, 2-20 characters, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.

See C9 here for the reason.

There are a number of other issues there. If the TC is new though I think the network is the problem. Ring Apple support and get them to talk you through the setup. The TC could actually be faulty.. you may be told to return it for warranty replacement.

    - - I have no idea. I bought it a few months ago. It looks like that: http://cdn.imore.com/sites/imore.com/files/styles/large/public/field/image/2013/ 06/airport_extreme_time_capsule_new.jpg?itok=N6OMIYeJ

Are you using wireless or ethernet to the MBP?

    - - Wireless on the MacBook Pro. I use Ethernet with my iMac (my iMac is on 10.6.8).

What are you unplugging .. that is power on the TC?

    - - Yes.

What are you resetting.. again that is the TC? What reset are you doing each time.

    - - Yes. I reset the Time Capsule using a pen in the little Reset button on the back. I even resetted while unplugging and plugging the Time Capsule at the same time as suggested in the Setup Guide.

What mode is the TC in? How is it connected to the network? Is it main router or bridged or something else?

    - - I don’t know about a mode. My Time Capsule is connected to my WiFi modem as prescribed in the Setup Guide.

Can you please make sure the names are all short, 2-20 characters, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.

    - - I don’t know where those names should go.

    - - It works fine with my iMac, and when I plug the Time Capsule via Ethernet to the MacBook Pro, it works well too. Since 10.8.5, my MacBook Pro has problems finding networks, and cannot find my Time Capsule at all.

    Thanks!

Clear out all the old names on the MBP wireless configuration and start over.

    See Tesserax information for this.

    - - I don’t know about a mode. My Time Capsule is connected to my WiFi modem as prescribed in the Setup Guide.

Ensure that the TC is plugged by ethernet into your modem.. LAN modem to WAN TC.

Ensure that the TC is set to bridge mode.

    bridgev6AU.png

Ensure that the wireless is set to create a wireless network.

    Then do a test.

With a simple wireless name.. eg TCGen5 for 2.4ghz.. and TCGen5ghz for the 5ghz name.. set names separately.. all names are short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.

Set the wireless channel to 1, then to 6, then to 11 at 2.4ghz.

Set the wireless channel to around 40 and around 150.

Each of these is a separate test.

No security whilst testing. See if any of the wireless shows in your MBP.. if it fails.. and your MBP can actually see and connect to the wifi from the modem.. then the TC is faulty.. take it back for checking or replacement by Apple.

    Thanks to all.

After trying and trying again for HOURS (or even weeks), I gave up.

Then, I go to work, and when I come back home, I see that my MacBook Pro found my Time Capsule and made a backup while I was gone!

And it has worked ever since, even after a restart!

    !?

    Well... I'll take it!
