I just noticed the strangest thing. I'm sitting with my MBA next to my phone which is charging and sitting on the armrest of this chair I am sitting on. Anyway, my phone accidentally grazed around the "tab" key on the keyboard, and my MBA went to sleep. I was able to wake it up 10 seconds later or so. I picked up my phone and gently grazed it against the tab button, and it actually caused my computer's screen to fade, and then come back once I moved the phone away without fully sleeping. It kept doing this until one of the grazes actually caused it to go into sleep mode. Does anyone have any clue as to why this strange phenomenon is happening? I will try take a video for you all to show you what is happening!

Maybe your phone is acting as some kind of RF emitter while charging, one with power enough to induct some interference's current in the MBA mother board. Just guessing... this kind of weird X-Files situations are usally related to RF and/or ground interferences.

Bought MBA, didnt have "black screen" yet. But have another issue: some times when close MBA while iTunes is playing it keeps plays music for 10-15 sec (so MBA doesnt go at sleep mode immideatley). Is it normal?
Little update: when itunes is running and I close MBA and after that open it and try to play it music again MBA goes to sleep mode!

Are you running Chrome ?
I would strongly urge you to install Firefox, import bookmarks from Chrome, then delete Chrome.
I did that last Friday, and from having at least one blackout a day, I have had *zero*.
Firefox works pretty well, the bookmarks bar looks almost identical, I cannot see any reason to put up with the Chrome-inspired blackouts !
(obviously said whilst knowing I will hit some bizarre Firefox bug tomorrow now I have posted this!)
Let us know if that helps!

My communications with Apple corporate and the local Mac store were unfruitful (even though I provided log output from the pesky sleep event), but 10.8.5 seems to have resolved the problem, at least from what I have observed over the last 24 hours.
My camera now does not work with Skype.

I updated to 10.8.5 as soon as it became available.
Was problem free until this morning. I opened my plugged in MBA, worked in Outlook for about 20 seconds and then black. quick key tap brought back to login.
Yes, I'm running chrome, yes, I had a few other applications open as well. These black-outs seem to have tapered off on my machine, but I had almost thought 10.8.5 had solved my problems. Looks like I was unfortunately mistaken.

I have my 11"Air'13 for nearly 2 weeks - the first day it came I reported to apple trackpad issue - a small gap like not glued together of something making clicking noise (top surfece was "loose") - so they have send me replacement.
While awaiting for it I was still using "old" and discovered this issue - it shuts down randomly. It happened about 8 times while working on something or idle. Getting '' ...Shut Down...because of a problem.." error
Now 3 days ago recieved new 11"Air - opened it, restored time machine and 30 min later back to the box - The screen color is horible - stands out so much, had them side by side - had all my familiy to come and see as thought im picky but Yeah HUGE difference.
I decide to live with the trackpad click rather then have "bad" screen but since making the decision it black screen 4 times.
Tomorrow UPS meant to collect "old" air but discovered this treat and you have confirmed my fears I will have to return both.
Eghh I love the 11"Air - but I guess decission has to be made ..

Sorry to hear thsi: if the screen is bad I would insist on another replacement, not live with a dodgy trackpad !
On the blackout topic: well, I am almost 1 week in without Chrome, and ZERO issues.
I would certainly urge anyone suffering to install Firefox, import bookmarks, then remove Chrome.
I believe that the vast majority of issues would disappear.
I did post a query on Chrome forums 4 days ago. zero response.
Tells me all I need to know about Google support care!
I haven't found anything missing from Firefox (I am sure I will trip over something sometime, but there is always Safari)
Good luck, & if you try this, please report if it works for you too

Yes Mike, I found too that when I uninstall all my software from the macbook it works just fine.
I noticed after uninstalling Skype the fact that video chat no longer works in 10.8.5 has gone away as well.
So no need for Apple to do anything then...

Wow, that is a bit of harsh sarcasm you have broadly thrown back at me: thanks !
I am NOT suggesting Apple should not investigate, but I suspect it might need them *and* google to bash heads together....can't see that happening soon !
I was simply trying to suggest an easy & practical solution for people who find the blackouts irritating. They were not show stopping, unlike a broken video chat function (if you want video), and using Firefox appears to me to offer all the capabilities of Chrome without the painful blackout screen.
But thanks for your useful comment.

So after a good 2 months of not having the black screen it has come back . I have done all the necessary steps . including replacing <mba - 5 times in my 14 days >
- My current findings is that it is not because of Chrome. [ Because I do not use chrome ]
- It is not the energy saving settings even though they do play a small part ( the power nap + dimming screen + shutting down the HDD + the screen going off timer ] are a small culprit but if you change the settings to 10 minutes / 15 minutes the black screen issues does goes away.
But 45 minutes ago it happened again after 2 months.
After carefully going though the logs it was nothing but miserable Flash Player !
I kept CNN.com running and after 10 minutes my screen went off ( the web page was not minimized ) and at that same moment i touched the mouse pad so that I can wake it up. [ volla it was blank black screen ] < was on safari not even firefox fyi >
Had to reboot > use disk utility and scan disk permissions > found erros > fixed it.
> shut down the MBA and reboot again
no issues went through logs it was Flash that caused it.
Now my thought is .. could Flash be running in the background even if Safari or any web browsing application is not running including " QUiT applications "
.. will monitor this and update my findings ..
- QQ is not working after new update : Mic + web cam not detected
- Skype is not working after new update : Mic + web cam not detected
But I have parallels and I always run these apps on Windows rather than on OS X
cheers guys and good luck.
