The tip to start iTunes in Safe Mode (Opt-Cmd while starting iTunes) is a bit of a godsend, worked perfectly for me. The first time I did it I got a message about some plug-in being disabled because of Safe Mode - whatever that plug-in is must be the culprit. (Sorry, in the middle of long-overdue iTunes sync I don't want to interrupt to go re-create the dialog).

You may also find a performance hit if you have Search the entire library selected. To Chnge it back to what you had in itunes 10 click on the small black arrow to the right of the magnifying glass in the search box and untick Search Entire Library.

I did this with a few Artworks just to test, it seems like it works, but then after restarting iTunes, it doesn't recognize any of the artwork that was updated in Safe Mode... so I don't think this is a valid solution...

Yep do these two things to get instant changes to meta info, data, covers etc.

Was taking up to a min to update the cover of a album on my new mac-mini

    1.  Open i-Tunes in Safe mode by Command + Option and clicking on i-Tunes

    2.  Ensure "keep library organised"  is not ticked

    Problem solved,

When done with all your changes just reselect keep library organised and then let it do its thing, at least you dont have to wait around for it then.

Had the same problem after upgrading to iTunes 11.  I tried all the suggestions in the other threads - turning off icloud, turning off search, starting iTunes in safe mode.  None of these worked.  Then I tried a tool called iDentify.  (https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/33814/identify).  To edit the metadata of a movie, song, etc., locate the file in Finder (you can right click the file in iTunes and select Show in Finder or just use finder to browse to the file under username/music/itunes/itunes media).   Then drag that file into iDentify, click the edit icon and change the metada (e.g. artwork) you want to change.  Click done and then save.  Go back to this song or movie in iTunes.  The change you made won't take effect until you play it.  So just double click it and then stop (or ESC) and the change will take effect.

It was taking me 2 to 3 to change the artwork of a single movie in iTunes.  I could change it in 5-10 seconds using iDentfiy.  Worked great.

It seems like this was done on purpose to make it hard to use iTunes to manage material that you didn't buy through the iTunes Store. Because I have an Apple TV, I was putting my old DVDs into iTunes. I want artwork so I was finding it and adding it manually. The delay doesn't prevent you from making one or two changes...it

's just annoying, but it is enough to make any large task or managing a library of any size virtually impossible.

If you are in Apple's environment, then you have to use iTunes and it would be nice if it was made for general use as a piece of software and not just the front end of their store. I give you enough money Apple!
