Q: can someone tell me how to join my windows 8 machine to my osx mountain lion servers active directory?

i have tried connecting my windows 8 machine to my mountain lion active directory every way possible and i get an error message saying something like this

"an active directory domain controller (AD DC) could not be contacted"
i only really want to do this to file share as when i and try to log in it maps the network drive but then doesnt let me access anything and i have tried to change permission multiple times server side.
Thanks!

Mountain Lion (Server) is not able to act as an Active Directory server. It can act as an Open Directory server which is not the same thing. This therefore explains why you cannot connect. On a related topic a Mountain Lion server also cannot act as an NT Domain style controller.

You can still login to a Mountain Lion file server from a Windows 8 machine. It sounds like the account you are logging in as does not have permission to access some folders. This would be especially likely to apply if you are only using guest access. You will need to check and if needed alter the permissions using Server.app on the server.

It is not usual to share the entire boot drive as this will include operating system folders that should not be messed with.

With regards to the users folders they are intended to only be accessible by the user themselves. If you yourself are accessing your own home folder from another computer you should be able to access the folders in your home folder if you login using your name and password.

What are you trying to do, access your own home directory or have a general shared folder?

Yes, you could share each user home folder individually rather than the entire HD and then map each as a separate mount using the appropriate user credentials.
