Q: No I-Cloud Icon.  How can I upgrade without that?

I need to upgrade the amount of space in my storage before September 30th. The on-line instructions say to locate the I-Cloud icon in my systems folder.  But there isn't one.  How can I upgrade without that?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

You can't: Snow Leopard is not compatible with iCloud (your signature says you have Snow Leopard - I assume this is correct?) and there is no iCloud icon in System Preferences (not System Folder). You can't have been making much use of iCloud with that - have you actually filled more than 5GB of space? (though you can't check this without the iCloud preference pane).

I'm afraid the only way you can deal with this (assuming you don't also have an iOS device, in which case see below) is to upgrade your operating system to minimum Lion 10.7.5 (also see below).

If you in fact have Lion or Mountain Lion and have been looking in the wrong place, and you wish to continue your current storage level, the instructions are here:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5527

Scroll down to 'How do I purchase my current plan?' and expand the section applicable to your computer or device.

If you want to think about upgrading your Mac, the requirements for Lion are:

    • Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    • 2GB of memory
    • OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    • 7GB of available space

To purchase it you will have to ring Apple at the number given at the bottom left of this page.

The requirements for Mountain Lion are:

    • OS X v10.6.8 or later
    • 2GB of memory
    • 8GB of available space

    and the supported models are:

    • iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
    • MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
    • MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
    • Xserve (Early 2009)
    • MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
    • Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
    • Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)

It is available from the Mac App Store (in Applications).

You should be aware that PPC programs (such as AppleWorks) will not run on Lion or above; and some other applications may not be compatible - there is a useful compatibility checklist at http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
