Q: imessage conversations out of order?

for some reason when imessage conversations sync between my 4S and my macbook, on the macbook everything is out of order. replies to me from days ago show as the newest, my more recent replies are somewhere in the middle of the conversation, and even then newest messages are above previous messages. then if I reply on the macbook, everything looks good until I close out of messages and go back in, replies on the macbook are then shoved randomly into an earlier part of the convo.

what's the deal? is there a way to sort it properly that I'm missing>

I'm sure that is all true, and it makes perfect sense but it doesn't make the situation any better for those who use iMessage.

My conjecture is had this been an iOS-related bug, one that the press was quick to harp on, it would have been fixed months ago. iOS is where the money is being made in Cupertino right now so it's only natural it takes absolute priority over all things Mac.

There was a workable solution posted on the boards:

    under "View/Messages"

    select:

    SHOW AS BOXES

    SHOW AS NAMES AND PICTURES

I did that several months ago and not one message out of order since.

    NOTES.

Show as Boxes requires a Chat to be open in the main Messages window otherwise the set of options are greyed out.

However as iMessages from an iOS device don't actually include info about the colour of the background of the Style setting  (They appear blue or green for outgoing on the iOS device based on how the app "sees" the incoming messages (SMS or iMessage) - and are displayed white whichever they are).

An iChat style Message from Messages over AIM, Jabber or Yahoo includes the info about the Font you are sending, the colour of that Font's text, and the Background (or Balloon by default) colour.

Show Names and Pictures requires that a Chat is open as well.

This can be as simple as just opening New Message even if no-one is in the "To" spot.

I had the same problems as before, looks like this isn't a fix for my issue.

I tried this and it worked till I closed my mbp and opened it an hour later.

I send and recieve imessages only on my mbp retina and have no other devices.

My messages are always horribly out of order except for the current chat, which then becomes out of order when I close my mbp and open it again later.

Judging by old posts, this has been a big issue for over a year.....how is it that it has not been addressed yet?

    Have you tried:

    VIEW/SORT BUDDIES/BY FULL NAME

    VIEW/MESSAGES/SHOW NAMES AND PICTURES

    VIEW/MESSAGES/SHOW AS BOXES

    VIEW/SORT CONVERSATIONS BY TIME

Since I've done this, I've not had the issue in any message thread.

Yes I have ticked all those and it makes no difference. It is not even consistently out of order, sometimes a chat will be ok, then 10 minutes later the last 5 messages will have dissappeared from the chat and I can't find them at all or they will show up in between two messages from yesterday.

I find sometimes that if I scroll back in time and then scroll forward to the present, that messages will realign themselves. But often not.

The thing is that this is not a syncing issue or a multiple device issue. This is imessage on an mbp with Mountain Lion and it is hopeless. I have started switching back to Skype for messaging.....it runs flawlessly.

I find that closing the messages app and re-opening it straight away corrects the order of all messages. What's strange is that I'll get a message alert, open up messages, everything will be messed up, close and re-open messages, and then everything's in order. I don't get why does it need to be opened once before it fixes itself? It only takes like 2 seconds to do but it does get annoying.

Yes I've noticed that works most of the time, but this seems so common a problem that it's hard to believe Apple hasn't delt with it. Maybe we have to wait for Mavericks.

I have mostly gone back to messaging on Skype which is problem free and also delivers much quicker to certain parts of Canada, specialy up north where Imessages will often go 1/2 hour before being delivered.

I have this problem too. In addition to that I dont get messages instantly sometimes. It does not send messages instantly even if the person I am talking to has imessage open on Mac or has iphone. I am surprised that Apple cannot get such a basic things right.

After half a year, still broken.

    Honestly, this is a joke.

Apple, get on with it and fix it !

Who cares about Parallax effect, if the messaging doesn't work ?

It makes me sad, really shows Apple doesn't care about their users at all.  I have no idea how something this widespread cannot be addressed after this long.

Beyond this major issue, the other thing that drives me nuts is searching within messages, the application lockes up or becomes extremly unstable when typing any characters in the search box.
