Q: Compass mode in Google Maps app does not function?

I have an iPhone 4S. When I use the Apple maps app the compass feature works flawlessly. When I use the Google Maps app, the compass mode is non responsive. It always points north. Does anyone know how to get compass mode in Google Maps app to function?

This drove me crazy for ages but I've finally figured it out...

 

I had disabled a load of stuff in the settings because I was suffering really poor battery life on my iPhone 4S. One of these disabled settings in particular was the cause of the compass feature in Google Maps not working properly. Here's what you need to do:

 

(1) On iOS 7.0 go into Settings > Privacy > Location Services > System Services.

 

(2) Enable Compass Calibration.
