Open the Mac App Store and try purchasing Mountain Lion 10.8. If you get told it's incompatible, choose About this Mac from the Apple menu, check if the computer has at least a Core 2 Duo(not Core Duo) or better CPU with at least 2GB of RAM, and if it does, phone the online Apple Store and order a download code for Lion 10.7.

I have this same issue. So Apple want people to purchase a new operating system and then purchase more storage as well???

I have been deleting emails like mad but it seems to have no effect. I use OSX 10.6.8 and there's no way of finding out how much storage is available or not or what is actually "stored"

How did you put data in iCloud, not from your Mac as it is incompatible. Do you have an iPhone?

I wasn't aware I had any data in it! All I know is that my email went from .mac to mobile me, and then I had to click a link to change to icloud

I still use .mac and .me email addresses

Then you have no data in iCloud other than your email. Unless you have a truly enormous amount of email you will be nowhere near the 5gb limit.

Archive them locally (move them to a folder in mail that is 'On your Mac' rather than in iCloud.

I was a former Mobile Me owner of storage paid per year.  I transfered everything from my iDisk over a year ago over to Google Drive and DropBox.  But I have a lot of emails in my @me.com email AND I have 2 iPhones.  But my version of Mac X is PRE Lion and NO it is not supposed to be upgraded.  I have asked Apple and they say to NOT upload Lion.  I have a 2009 MacBook Pro.  I have 2 iPhones, a 4 and a 5s for my daughter and I, and we use iCloud there.  It's all maintained by One @me.com account for billing for Aps etc.  I can't see where to go to storage when I'm logged into iCloud to get my @me.com emails....

We are using 16GB and we are being 'downgraded' to 5GB according to emails I'm getting from Mac.

Your Mac can be upgraded to Mountain Lion (10.8.5) and as you use iCloud, should be.

Buy it from the App Store and upgrade, then you will have full iCloud functionality.

    Backup before you upgrade.

NO, as I already had stated:  I have spoken w Mac/ Apple.  I am NOT supposed to upgrade THIS computer to Lion.  It is not compatable.

So I guess I will go into Genuis and ask them what to do.

2009 MBP's are compatible, you have been misinformed.

All the examples of 2009 Macbook Pros are compatible, I'm typing this on a mid 2009 Macbook Pro using Mountain Lion, so unless you actually have a different model you can upgrade.

Let's find out which model you really have.

Click on the Apple menu, choose About This Mac>More Info>System Report, you will get this:

    Screen Shot 2013-09-25 at 1.08.14 PM.png

As you can see, this is a 5,5 (mid 2009 MacBookPro) and it is using Mountain Lion.

    What's yours?

Yes I know how to get my Apple specs!~  been using Apple Mac longer than most 'Geniuses' have been alive!!!

You can see my specs below.

I am using the wrong terminology -- it is NOT RECOMMENDED as it is Unstable!  I have spoken w Apple about it several times.  So you may be OK but they said it WILL be MUCH SLOWER and to NOT do it.  My computer is already too slow.  So I will listen to Apple!  They said this is the first version of the MacBook PRO Titanium and that it will be WAY too slow on Lion!!!

    Hardware Overview:

      Model Name:          MacBook Pro

      Model Identifier:          MacBookPro2,2

As you have access to iCloud-compatible iPhones you can do it on one of them.

If you wish to continue your current storage level, the instructions are here:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5527

Scroll down to 'How do I purchase my current plan?' and expand the section applicable to iPhones.

If you know then why did you describe your Mac as a 2009 model when it is actually a 2005 model?

It is a 2005 model and it is too old for Mountain Lion.

Giving an inaccurate date makes it hard to give accurate advice.
