In Terminal: java -version says 1.6...  System Preferences says 1.7.0_40-b43

What version am I actually running, and how to I get rid of all older versions and just keep 1.7?  Also, terminal command "which java" returns /usr/bin/java. I'm just starting to learn java and want to be sure I can actually use the features of 1.7

Mac Pro (Early 2008), Mac OS X (10.7.3)
