Q: Can my 4th gen iPod handle iOS 7?

I bought it when it was ios5, and I upgraded to iOS 6. It lags a lot when I open high-end programs (it's actually lagging as I am typing this). But when I just surf the web or text it's fine.

Question is, can my iPod handle iOS 7? All I'm going to do is use safari, iMessage, and play music . Probably not games .

iPod touch (4th generation), iOS 6.1

It realy ticks me off how companies like Apple & Microsoft charge such ridiculous amounts of money for these devices & then only support them for a year or two.  I have a 4th gen iPod touch that is now basically junk because it won't be able to run iOS 7.  All the apps I have are now releasing updates which make them compatible with iOS 7 which means they won't work correctly or at all on iOS 6.  Their buy back program is a joke - you spend $300+ for a device we will only support for maybe a year & then we'll give you maybe $50 back to put towards the newest $300-$400 device....yeah right.  A few years ago Apple was the way to go because they didn't do this -  it was more a Microsoft thing.  Now Apple seems the worst out of them all.  These companies are BILLION dollar companies & don't need to be charging so much for these devices. This is why when it came time to get a tablet, I stayed away from the iPad & went with Android.

    Easy rules:

Basically if u have a 256mb device ... No ios 7 and probably no ios 6. Some 512mb devices allow ios7 if they have more than 1 CPU core. So 2 CPU Cores, 2 gpu cores, plus 512mb ram = min specs for ios 7

iPod 4th gen = 1 CPU, 256MB ram.... Impossible to run ios7. Ios 7 takes 256-300mb memory to run. The iPod 4th gen can BARELY run ios 6!

1 CPU, 512mb ram is BARELY enough for ios 7. This is the iPhone 4. They allow it, but it runs horrific. It should never have been allowed on the iPhone 4.

    4s. 2 CPUs, 512MB... Runs acceptable.

Ios 7 needs 2-4 CPU cores, 2-4 gpu cores, and 1gb ram to properly function.

    Ipad 3: 2 CPUs, 2 GPUS, 1 gb.... Supported

    Ipad 4: 2 cpus, 4 GPUs, 1gb, .... Runs VERY Well

    iPhone 5s: 2 64bit CPU cores , 4 GPUs , 1gb

    iPhone 5/5c: 2 32bit CPUs, 2 GPUs, 1gb

Just don't run ios 7. You don't HAVE to have it.

Most apple mobile devices can run two years worth of iOSes. So if you start with 6, you can probably run 7 (unless you bought something late and it barely runs 6)

Apples problem was a lack of ram in earlier devices. They never should have made 256mb tablets (ipad 1) and 128-256mb touch iPods (gen 1-4).

They finally are getting caught up 1gb in: ipad 3/4, iPhone 5/5c/5s

    512mb devices: iPhones 4/4s, ipad 2, iPod 5th gen

    256mb: ipad 1, iPhone 3/3GS, iPod 3/4th gen

    128mb: iPhones 1/2, iPod 1/2 gen

However the iPod touch are apples...hmmm... Low cost devices. They aim them at people who can't afford the ipad,  ipad mini , iPhone

Even the newest 5th gen has 2 CPUs and 512mb ram. That barely runs ios 7 which really needs 1-1.5gb

As I said , ios 7 isn't required. Ios 6 will run most apps for quite a time. I've seen ios 5 devices still going strong. The mobile market is this way:apple, google (droid), Microsoft.  If you want something that supported for 3-5 yrs (7 yrs if u buy a TOP end computer/laptop - $5,0000-70000), get a desktop or laptop. Mobile devices have only about a 3 yr lifespan tops.

    ------------------------------------------------------

    1 GB - iPad 3/4/air, iPad mini 2, iPhone 5/5C/5S

    512 MB - iPad 2, iPad mini 1, iPhone 4/4S, iPod touch 5

    256 MB - iPad 1, iPhone 3GS, iPod touch 3/4

    128 MB - iPhone 2G/3G, iPod touch 1/2

There's no such thing as the iPhone 1/2/3 ***?! Also, touch is a very important word you missed out:

    64 MB - iPod 5/classic, iPod nano 5/6

    32 MB - iPod 1/2/3/4, iPod nano 1/2/3/4, iPod mini 1/2

K first things first. What I don't get is why iOS 7 supports iphone 4 s. If you look iPod touch 4 gen. and iphone 4 s have the same operating chip. What's more , more people have ipod 4 gen. So apple made a big mistake that affected them majorly. Now most people have android phones instead of ipod touches. In my opinion apple should just make iPod touch 4 gen compatible with iOS 7 ( or a earlier version of iOS 7.)

The iPhone 4 has 512 MB of moemory but the 4G iPod only has 256 MB. That is why not iOS 7 for the 4G iPod as already stated in this discussion.

    WRONG

The iPhone 4 is a single CPU, 512mb device

4s, dual core CPU, 512MB ram

    Both have 512mb ram

But a single core isn't enough for ios7

    Here's an easy way:

If u have ONE CPU core, you CANT RUN IOS7

If you have 256MB ram or less you can't run ios 7

Apple isn't being greedy. Ios7 really uses 512MB-1024MB ram... When needed , it can make 500-600MB free

On a dual core 512MB device, ios7 is specially coded and needed was down to use 256-384MB ram

It's just too new to run on devices with 256MB ram or single core

    It's really THAT simple

If you want ios 7, you need to buy:

5th gen iPod. Even that's not ideal for iOS 7. The 6th gen would be better when it comes out

    iPad 2,3,4,5 (iPad 2 has 2 cores and 512mb)

    iPad mini - all versions

    iPhone 4, 4S, 5, 5c, 5s

Correction to my above post. The iPhone 4 can run ios7 but it's SLOW. SINGLE CORE 512mb

It sort of breaks the rules as to what iOS 7 needs but apple puts extra efforts into iOS for the phones vs the iPods.

One problem is that certain apps are now updated to tun ONLY on iOS7 --for example, American Airlines' app does this.

Consequently, I can no longer use AA's app in my 4th generation iPod. Admittedly I don't have too many apps, but this one is the first one I've seen coming with this limitation.

You can likelty download tthe last compativer version of an app.

If  you  have iOS 4.2.1 or later on the iPod and there was version compatible with that version, then you should be able to get a compatible version by:

App Store: Downloading Older Versions of Apps on iOS - Apple Club

App Store: Install the latest compatible version of an app
