Q: Why have I been told I need to purchase icloud space?

I have received a mail warning me that my 20 GB complimentary storage upgrade I received when  I moved to iCloud  expires on September 30, 2013.

The mails say s that my iCloud storage will be automatically adjusted downwards to the free 5 GB plan.

However when I follow instructions to purchase more space I cannot purchase my current plan - the note says I will be automatically charged for the plan on Sept 30th.  Why then did I receive the mail....am I missing something?

    1. Choose Apple () menu > System Preferences, then click the iCloud icon.
    2. Click the Manage button.
    3. Click Change Storage Plan.
    4. Click Downgrade Options.
    5. Enter your Apple ID password, then click Manage.

What does it say about the expiry date here?

If it says what it says in the picture, click your current plan then done.

If it says that it will renew then did you previously purchase additional storage? If you did, it would have over-ridden your complimentary 20GB and will renew a year from the time you purchased it. People who have done this have found that it does not stop the automated emails, but they can be ignored as long as you are sure you have purhcased the storage.

THanks for your helpful answer.  When I look at details of my plans it looks like i have one selected that will continue automatically at the end of the month.

I may well have purchased a plan previously but what I do not understand is that if I have a plan in place, that will renew automatically and which I paid for why have I received a mail telling my a complimentary plan is expiring and I am about to "loose" storage?

People who have purchased extra storage in the last year, and thus cancelled the free upgrade, have still been getting these emails: they are evidently automated and not adjusted for those to whom it no longer applies. 'The left hand knoweth not what the right hand doeth' (Ecclesiastes 11:1).

Thanks Roger.   That is reassuring to hear.
