Sep 27, 2013 11:28 AM in response to clarkfiztroyby léonie,Where do you see duplicates? iPhoto does not duplicate photos, unless you explicitely create copies.
The same photo may appear in many albums, depending on the tags or the status, like edited. But these apperent duplicates are only references to the same original image file, they are not actually duplicates.
But if you actually have imported duplicates, you have to search for them manually, by sorting the photos by title or date, or use third-party tools, like Duplicate Annihilator.

Sep 27, 2013 11:56 AM in response to clarkfiztroyby Old Toad,If you're seeing these "duplicates" via the Finder they are NOT duplicates. If you're seeing the duplicates in the iPhoto library's window You can use one of these applications to identify and remove duplicate photos from an iPhoto Library:
- iPhoto Library Manager - $29.95
- Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto - free
- Duplicate Annihilator - $7.95
- PhotoSweeper - $9.95 (This app can search by comparing the image's bitmap or histogram thus finding duplicates with different file names and dates).

Sep 27, 2013 1:23 PM in response to léonieby clarkfiztroy,Thanks for your reply, I think it is a problem from a bad software update when I tried to get my old mac updated to use my new iphone. I tried the duplicate finder program but I couldn't get it to scan iphoto program. I guess a call to the tech dept. is in order.

Dec 14, 2013 8:14 PM in response to Old Toadby tmilwaukee,I have used 3 of the 4 IPhoto Apps that Old Toad has suggested (all except PhotoSweeper) and none of these are removing ALL of the duplicates. I can see obvious duplicates in the Library, but they are not being removed for some reason. Should I try PhotoSweeper?

May 11, 2014 10:40 AM in response to clarkfiztroyby grnmthawk,I have a 2009 macbook pro ~
iPhoto has just recently started adding duplicate photos to my library ~ extremely frustrating! I currently have 19k photos which I highly doubt are originals. I started deleteing some of the dupes but as you all know it is extremely time consuming. I have an iphone 5 and my photos are imported via wifi. I rarely attach my phone to my mac. I used to have picasa on my mac and recently deleted the app thinking that was why but it is still doing it. It even seems to be adding them back after I delete them! Anyone know why or how to stop this??? My mac is extremely slow as well. I do not have a ton of icons on my desktop as I read that may slow it down. It seems like when I use my Word program for mac it locks up more - also when I use the provided 'Mail' program that comes with mac it seems to interfere with speed.
Any recommendation on how to stop the duplicates and how to speed up the mac? I would go to an apple store and sit with a genius however I recently moved to the boondocks and the nearest Apple store is 3 hours away (ugh, what was I thinking!)
Any recommendations ~ should I find a different photo app and delete iphoto (which one?)? I am the 'photographer' of a large family so I take a ton of pics and really don't have 20 minutes everytime I try to updoad a pic to facebook etc.
I appreciate your feedback and advise!

I just deleted a bunch of files under "all my files" and am in the process of moving some of the large stuff to dropbox (which is taking a while) - if once on dropbox I can delete from mac, right?
Where do I find how much free space?

May 11, 2014 12:27 PM in response to grnmthawkby Terence Devlin,Whoa there:
I just deleted a bunch of files under "all my files"
What exactly did you delete from there? Documents? Photos? Music? Movies?
and am in the process of moving some of the large stuff to dropbox (which is taking a while) - if once on dropbox I can delete from mac, right?
I don't know, you'll need to ask Dropbox support about that.
As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?
Post back with the result.

May 11, 2014 12:55 PM in response to clarkfiztroyby app1e3.14,I have a lot of duplicates. I bought iPhoto Library Manager and have been using. It still shows many duplicates not moved to trash, they are side by side. I was going to ask if it is possible to delete from ILM but today I am horrified to find that I can't open iPhoto. My library is won't open. IPM is still opens but iPhoto is gone. Help! ruth
