If the AirPort Express is properly configured to extend the AirPort Extreme's wireless network, it would be in bridge mode and cannot provide IP addresses to network clients. Only the Extreme would be able to do so.

If network clients are getting non-valid IP addresses it is most likely because they are unable to communicate with the DHCP service on the Extreme.

okok right on very interesting,,,,so how do i fix it???,,it had been working fine until about 4 days ago.

sometimes restarting it helps,,others it doesnt help.

for example right now i can connect my laptop, my iphones 4s, an iphone 5 and appletv.

my kids ipad and my desktop wont connect to the internet.

i just unplugged the express to see whatd happen.  the extreme signal was strong and gave it a 169.254.11.213ip.  it is not connecting to the internet, but my laptop, is right next to my imac, and is gettin internet just fine with this ip :  186.188.169.57.

Assuming you have both base station configured properly for an extended network the only other thing that is critical is base station placement. Especially for the extending base station. The extending base station must be within range of the base station that it is extending to do so properly with enough bandwidth to be useable. It may be possible that your Express is just at the border of this range and thus not able to provide a useable extended network for clients that connect to it.

Please check out the following AirPort User Tip for details. You want to be sure that your Express is within a 25+ dB SNR range of the Extreme.

i was trying the signal monitoring and yeah i kinda loose some all the way where my imac is, BUT as i said, my mac air is right next to it and I'm able to get online just fine.  ALSO, my kids ipad was right next to the extreme (which is connected to the modem), and he's not able to get on the internet.....i've been trying to fix this for at least 3 hours.......

Another thing is to verify which AirPort your device is actually connected to regardless of its proximity to any base station. You can easily check this using your MacBook Air by looking at the BSSID value on the drop-down menu of the AirPort icon on the OS X menu bar. The BSSID is the wireless MAC address (or AirPort ID) that the MBA is connected to.

why does it matter where is it connecting to?  if i unplugged the express, it should connect to the extreme, since my mac air connected to the extreme.

Is my airport extreme also supposed to be on bridge mode or dhcp only, or dhcp and Nat???

The Extreme should be configured with both NAT & DHCP enabled.
