Q: Time machine w wi-fi won't connect to Wi-Fi network, but does connect via Ethernet.

Since downloading latest airport firmware, have been having some problems keeping my network operating (Hughest Satellite modem with Airport Extreme and Airport Time Capsule). Well, in the process of resetting the Airport Extreme for the 8th time in about 2 weeks, I made a mistake, and accidentally told Airport Utility to forget the Time Capsule that serves to extend the Wi-Fi network.

Then I couldn't get the network to remember it. So reset in order to reconfigure.

I think that I reset it correctly -- hold down the reset button for 5 seconds or more, unplug, wait 10 seconds or more, then plug it in, holding reset down until yellow light blinks.

Tried reconfiguring it via wi-fi, and it just wouldn't complete.

Plugged Time Capsule directly into the internet, and it did reconfigure and join network.

But it still refuses to resume its old role as a network repeater. When unplugged from ethernet, goes into yellow blinking mode and stays there (for hours).

Solved at last! Really struggled over this issue and looked at a number of discussions.  Eventually found a line of inquiry that was fruitful.  After numerous resets and creating a couple of new networks that didn't work, made a clean one, and used SysPrefs>Network>Advanced>Diagnostics. Working through the program provided the option to change from ethernet to wireless.  Suddenly everything started to work together.  I had tried it earlier when the TC was down and not on the internet, and it didn't work, but once all the individual parts of the Network were running, the switch to wi-fi worked.  Still don't really understand why, but I'm grateful for the continuing help and insight the communities provide.
